The
Trinidad and Tobago Automobile Sports Association’s
Inaugural Race Meeting was held on Sunday 6th April, 2003.
The
first event, the Stock Car Series got off to a flying
start, with seven starting competitors. Within three seconds
of the Green Flag, they were all bearing down to the bottom
corner. Three more, and they sorting themselves out into
single file for the tight S Bend.
For
their first two races, Christian Hospedales snatched victory
from 2002 Champion Stock Car Driver Gregory De Verteuil.
Hospedales, who has been settling for second place all
of last season managed to wrangle both finishes, but De
Verteuil did not let himself be totally demoralized, maintaining
victory in their final race.
In
the Modified Production B Race, Mark Singh squeezed the
accelerator, urging his Honda Civic forward to create
a comfortable distance between him and fellow contender
Tom Miller. Victory was effortless for him, and he cupped
three successive wins comfortably.
Modified
Production A Class had the crowd on the edge of their
seats, with two power houses Ravi Singh, 2002 Champion
Driver of the category confronted by Tankoo Baboolal,
2002 Champion Driver GTU Class. Both drivers having a
wealth of experience, Ravi Singh clung to the line of
the top corner, knowing if he moved slightly, Tankoo would
dive for the opportunity. The Third Generation RX7, with
a history of scorching finishes did not disappoint, and
he won his three races, but not with out an aggressive
showdown from Tankoo Baboolal, to the crowd’s delight.
The
final race of the day was a handicap event, with all cars
of all groups and classes competing together, with the
slower cars at the front of the grid, and the faster cars
behind. There was to be only one winner . All the drivers,
knowing what was required, drove with a controlled fury
that was awesome to watch.
Rounding
the bottom corner, through the S Bend, to the hairpin,
the car in pole position had fallen to eight place. GTU
Driver Joe Nanan snatched the first position, and maintained
a lead for more than two laps of the 10 laps, but it was
not to last. Mark Singh’s Honda, which started at
tenth position, surged forth to take the lead, followed
by the rotary power of Mark Williams’ silver RX7.
On
the straightaway, where fate could fall either way, the
crowd crossed their fingers in the finest display of racing,
that was both awesome and majestic.
At
the last second, the Civic surged forth to leave Mark
Williams in the dust of second place.
