The
Grand Finale of AutoSport Drag Racing took place on Sunday
with the unpredictable weather throughout the island keeping
everyone guessing as to what to expect on Race Day.
However
after some slight drizzles early on in the morning, the
Good Lord allowed a full day of competition, and then there
came the showers that gave the final blessings around 5:10
pm to bring the Drag Racing year to a close.
After
staging 9 Events starting way back in January, some affected
by rain, Champions were crowned in all eight brackets contested
from 16 seconds right up to the Open Class where competitors
have been climbing into the 7 seconds Bracket with impunity.
With
Sheldon Bissessar sitting out on the sidelines after setting
the fastest time for the year at the October Event, the
other big guns were intent on bettering his 7.703 seconds
time. However try is they may, only Michael Luke with his
Mint Cars Chevron Rail came anywhere near with his single
run clocking 7.78 seconds. The Open Class was the only Bracket
affected when proceedings were terminated with the final
showers.
Hero
Boodram continued his total domination of the Ten-Seconds
Bracket registering another comfortable win to also clinch
the Overall Points Champion Award for 2003. Gary Smith placed
second with the other two competitors in this bracket seemingly
wanting to start a 9-seconds Bracket all on their own. Jason
Laing with his Castrol Puff-n-Stuff Turbo Rx 7 finally worked
most of the bugs out of his car to register a 9.7 seconds
time. But it was Shaun Ready with his Turbo Rx Monster Sunny
who again blew away his previous record, this time clocking
9.173 seconds and complaining that his gearing had him hitting
the Rev-limiter. Eight seconds seems to be an easy reality
for him next time around.
The
12-Seconds Bracket saw Alvin Pillai registering a long-overdue
win to push Richard Gardner with his B13 FWD 2000 Turbo
into second place and Bracket Champion Paul Chung into the
3rd place.
And
the battle between Rajesh Ramjattan and Renny Tokhai came
right down to the wire. With both drivers running identical
cars and engines, and Renny holding a slim 10 points lead,
Rajesh registered the win to clinch the 13 Seconds Championship
Award, with Tokhai in 2nd place and Chester Lewis in third.
The
14 Seconds Bracket saw the regulars being upset with Curtis
Sookhai also registering his first win in the Bracket. Riad
Hosein placed second and Gerard Pegus, stepping up in class
clinching the 3rd spot.
The
15 Seconds Bracket also had its fair share of upsets with
relative newcomer Eddie Awkar driving his Honda Civic also
registering his first win over the very experienced Gerard
Pegus and Keith Darbeau placing third.
Fadak
Ghanny continued his domination of the 16 Seconds Bracket
with another convincing win over two newcomers in Clayton
Jobity and Lynden Mathews.
Other
outstanding awards won on the day were:
Hero
Boodram with the Best Reaction Time of .501 seconds,
Larry
Ragoobar – Fastest 6 cylinder 11.603 seconds,
Richard
Gardner – Fastest 4 cylinder 11.993 seconds
