Together with Richard 'DRY' Williams (S15 SILVIA), I took my RX 7 to MAS Tuning in Point Lisas for a short dyno session on their New Dynojet 248 dynamometer. This is actually the first chassis dyno in the country and the first time I have ever "dynoed" a car of mine. Weather in the shop today was pretty hot and humid. I was glad because I could correlate the dyno runs with what we normally see at the track. Not the best weather for making power by a long shot, but it was typical of what we've seen at most of the drag events in the past.

We spent about 2 hours on the dyno and made some real good progress with my brand new second-hand 1st Gen 7 TURBO.

At the end of the last session we were putting precisely 146.6 BHP (about 175 HP at the flywheel) @ 6000 RPM and 149 ft-lbs @ 3200 RPM to the ground with the STOCK EFI combination and 5 PSI boost. That's was good enough for 15's on the track. FINGERS CROSSED....

MORE ON THE DYNOJET

The Dynojet Dynamometer is a revolutionary tool that offers advanced diagnostics on a wide variety of vehicles. Automobiles with as little as 20 horsepower to race cars with 1200 horsepower can be tested safely, consistently and reliably in the shop under ideal load conditions.

The Dynamometer design features 48" diameter, knurled, precision balanced drums. The 48" drums provide stable contact for the tires eliminating unnecessary slippage and tire deformation resulting in precise repeatable results every time. The unique Dynamic testing capability allows a realistic simulation of street or track conditions, highlighting mechanical problems graphically as they would occur and eliminating unnecessary engine and power train wear in actual road use testing.

Unlike other Dynos which simply measure horsepower, the dynamic testing and graphing capability highlight problems in an easy to interpret manner. Electrical, fuel, clutch or convertor slippage and drive train problems are determined quickly. All tests are stored on computer for future comparison and analysis. Automatic measurement of the barometric pressure and ambient air temperature together with humidity measurement ensure repeatability between tests.

Dynojet's advanced engineering delivers the precise horsepower measurements a technician needs to make quick and accurate evaluations of engine performance and drive train problems.

Dynojet Research has created a Dynamometer that can duplicate the best "seat of the pants" road testing, right in the shop. Our method of measuring horsepower is relatively simple. Energy drawn from the rear tire is stored in a rotating mass sized to simulate driving a vehicle on the road. A computer connected to the Dynamometer displays horsepower by measuring drum acceleration. Runs with up to 1200 horsepower are processed into easy to interpret graphics and saved for future reference.

Virtually any road condition can be re-enacted by the DynoJet 248:

-Engine Load
-Powertrain Loss
-Total Vehicle Performance
