JOHN “Penti” POWELL and co-driver NICK TELFER win Rally Trinidad 2012!

Flying the T&T flag high, John “Penti” Powell has won Rally Trinidad 2012.
After a 3 day battle mostly with Sean Gill of Barbados, Gary Gregg and Jeff Panton from Jamaica, John managed to climb his way to the top in his S14 WRC Impreza.

Gill was leading most of the rally over the 3 days, however a tragic roll on Bronte in his WRC SX-4 cost Gill the rally. Both driver and navigator escaped with little more than bruised egos – but they said the car should be back up and running in no time and will definitely be more than ready for Rally Barbados 2012 (the second leg of the Caribbean Rally circuit). Every year the team of Gill an d Cummings impress us with their equipment and ability. They have been true competitors and a force to be reckoned with in past years with the Ignis, the Swift and now the WRC SX4. Gill proves that he can handle any surface like a champion and the team working on that SX-4 are incredible. But as someone was saying “pressure does buss pipe”, it seems Powell and Telfer were really putting on the pressure. Gill will be a formidable opponent to them again in Barbados and Jamaica this year as he is so technical and calculated that he wont be making the same mistakes.

Powell won Rally Jamaica 2011 and now brings two of the three top regional rally trophies as wins for T&T. A Rally Barbados win has always eluded Powell, with a 2nd place as his best so far in that rally. Hopefully 2012 will make it a first for him, but he has alot of work to beat Bajans such as Sean Gill, Roger ‘The Sheriff’ Skeete and Paul “Surfer” Bourne on their home ground. Powell has however won in both T&T and Jamaica, a feat neither Bajan champions have yet managed.

It was interesting to note that every foreigner for this rally said that Trinidad has some of the best gravel stages in the Caribbean and can rival international stages.

Official results will be posted shortly.

Great rally folks!
Congrats to all the finishers of the event. Just making it to Saith Park on Sunday is a huge accomplishment given the tough conditions of Rally Trinidad.
