Following the successful migration of the MINI showroom to Oxford Motors, located at the ANSA Automotive building on Richmond Street, the next generation of brand new models made their debut at the recent MINI showroom launch. The range of available models includes the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S, the new MINI Cooper Cabrio, the MINI Clubman, Countryman, Countryman Cooper S and Countryman All4.

Sheldon Bissessar, also known as the Trinidad Rocket, was recently nominated by the Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association for the Award of the Americas for outstanding achievement in Motorsport for 2011. Mohammed Ali, President of the TTASA and Premanand Badaloo of the TDC and others made the journey with Sheldon to the Hotel RIU in Panama City where the official Prizegiving Ceremony was held in honour of sportspersons from affiliated Latin American and Caribbean countries.

The day began in earnest with a 7am call time at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. Mitsubishi L200s, Ford Rangers, Land Rovers, Range Rovers Suzuki Jimnys, Toyota Hiluxes, Mazda BT50s, and even a chop-top, door-netted Nissan Patrol were gearing up for a taste of the TOTAL Trailblazers 4×4 Annual All Terrain Challenge event. Last year there was so much rain that the King of the Hill had to be cancelled but this year, things seemed off to a great start.

The stands were packed at the Summit Raceway in Norwalk and with the pits filled at the same time the attendance was estimated at over 50,000– more than the average amount for NHRA National Events. This came as no surprise as the Night Under Fire has been recognized as the largest single-day Drag Racing event on the planet! It is an exhibition drag racing show open only to invited racers. Our very own local Sheldon Bissessar was specially invited to make some passes with three of the fastest Top Dragsters on the planet today including previous IHRA World Record holder Troy Stone.

The first IHRA Nitro Jam event for 2011 kicked off at Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida where Methanex-sponsored Trinidad Rocket Sheldon Bissessar entered the Top Dragster competition. The first pass of the day yielded a 5.87-second time putting Sheldon Bissessar in the number one qualifying position.

In 1986, Trinidad & Tobago was treated to a spectacle of Motorsport that many remember as one of the greatest events they ever witnessed. The effect was such that spectators rushed on to the roads and racing had to be stopped after the second race. So great was their passion for seeing the streets of San Fernando alive with the glorious sound of full race machines at full throttle.

Two-time F1 Champion Mika Häkkinen visited Trinidad & Tobago recently to spread the word about Johnnie Walker International’s “Join the Pact” campaign against drinking and driving. Weather conditions were extremely harsh with ambient temperatures at roughly 30-40˚F which is great for building power for the engine but not so good for traction. This was evident in the few practice runs where trying to get the car to hook was seemingly impossible with the Rocket’s supercharged, methanol-powered engine.
For 2010, Sheldon has won all five International events entered so far in the United States and has set the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Top Dragster World Record in a ¼ mile time of 5.78 seconds at 242MPH.
