The High Speed Stages began at 9:00am and the event began with 25 competitors, missing Dean Serrao and Colin Khan. The tough conditions of the high intensity stages did not deter the teams and they rallied on through the up and downs , sharp corners and dusty straights Bronte and Cedar Hill are notorious for. The WRC cars were back and forth trading times with John Powell and James Betts not too far behind. Casualties of Day 2 were : Peter Morris (electrical fire), Gobin Mahadeo (turbo failure/fire), Colin Khan (engine), Devendra Nath (engine) and Prentice Ali (double crash).

TTRC kicked off its premiere event, Rally Trinidad 2013 last Friday in the Hasley Crawford Stadium. This year the stadium was set up a bit differently from previous years. The competitors showed their skills when going through the new layout with lots of sideways action with the sounds of screeching tyres and anti lag, providing many opportunities for the media to get some fantastic shots.

Sunday turned out to be a test of nerves with Powell needing to find 18 seconds to catch Gill and Panton just 15 seconds off of Powell. Gregg’s only hope for a podium finish would be a mistake by one of the front runners which would actually materialize late on Sunday. Powell came out a determined competitor and showed his true grit as the lead was cut to 3 seconds after the first 4 stages. Gill was sweeping after being first on Saturday and this proved costly as there was little he could do to hold off the charge by Powell.

From the Friday evening opening in the Hasely Crawford Stadium, one could see the hype was building, and service park area was full of life with some of the best Rally machinery in the Caribbean today. John Powell’s WRC Subaru S14 (Shell Helix / Intercontinental Shipping) was hot topic as it was compared to the visiting competition of Jamaican’s Jeffrey Panton (Ford Focus WRC06 – Total Lubricants) and Gary Gregg (Ford Focus WRC05), and the ever formidable Bajan opposition of Sean Gill’s Suzuki SX4 WRC06 (Shell V-Power / Monster / Lifestyle Motors / Virgin Atlantic).

After a disastrous start in the previous rally, on his much anticipated return to rallying – Ainsley “Mr. Action” Lochan with co-driver Robert Cadiz, in his STAG/ULTRA/JOSEF’s EVO IX, showed his top rivals that he is still a force to be reckoned with, by winning the final rally aptly named Rally Finale Reformed, albeit a slim margin over the Shell Helix/Intercontinental Shipping sponsored EVO X of John Powell and Jason Costelloe.

The rain skirted Arima Race Club for TTKA’s event # 6 this past Sunday 17th July. With only four more events left for the rest of the 2011 season, there were some important points to be earned. The race day provided lots of excitement, despite the smaller competitor group than usual, particularly with the anti clockwise race direction, which, on previous occasions, provided some gripping entertainment.

Finally after nearly 5 years AutoSport was able to stage an event in T&T. This brought many from varying disciplines to participate in one Event – certainly what was hoped to have achieved at the Arima Grand Prix, (and that matter is far from over) and finally getting some relief for many of those who entered that Event and now able to relieve a tiny bit of pent-up racing energy.
