I don't know if it is my background in academia, but I find it VERY hard to take a study seriously when it is conducted and hosted by a company that is also part of the evaluation. I am not saying that the results are untrue, but I will say that Amsoil has a vested interest in presenting the results in a certain way.

For example, the idea that only Amsoil can run extended drain intervals (as presented in the results section) is a pack of bullcrap. Most of the other oils in the study are designed to run the same extended drain intervals (10,000 miles average or more) and are often found MUCH cheaper than Amsoil in the US

After reading that piece of filth marketing, I REFUSE to take any of the study seriously.

I agree with most of what you are saying; however, I don't know of any other oil that claims to be able to run for 25,000 miles (approx. 40,000 km) or one year, except AMSOIL Signature Series. This is not the normal AMSOIL XL they are using in this test.

I think you misunderstood that part. Synthetic lubricants, such as Mobil 1 Extended Performance, claim 15,000 miles for normal conditions or vehicle's recommended oil change interval for severe. AMSOIL Signature Series claims 15,000 miles for severe and 25,000 miles for normal. If calculating severe change intervals, it is definitely more economical with AMSOIL. What they did in these tests was change the AMSOIL at 11,318 miles and as if the vehicles were doing this 11,318 under severe conditions. This was the change mileage used because "light-duty vehicles accumulate an average of 11,318 miles a year and are generally used in driving conditions that fall under the severe service category." None of the other oils carry a severe service interval recommendation. They just say to go with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations under severe conditions but 15,000 miles for normal. Most vehicles (even in T&T) fall under severe conditions as well.

For me personally, I change my oil at 35% of the recommended change interval, which is even better than the recommendation for severe service change.

But yes, I agree that this test done by AMSOIL can be skewed to their benefit. I am also very critical about these things.

fixed it for you. Guardol is a great oil nonetheless, but dont even try to run it for extended periods like you would a full synthetic.

Schaeffers 7000 is also semi synthetic...marketed as 'synthetic plus' thats the reason I'll never buy Schaeffers, they're selling sub par semi synthetic at the cost of full synthetic.

Are you losing oil between changes? If so, how much?
If not, leave it alone.

FSS does, at $75 a qt. Soon will be at $68 a qt... the 15w40 is already 68 a qt for oil changes or if you bring your bottle.

Recently saw Shell prices went up.

Shell helix ultra $93>$130 (per liter)

Shell Helix semi-syn $221>$250 (4 liters)

In my opinion it’s ‘bess’ oil but with all the competition from boutique oils, They might just price themselves out of the retail market.

My off-roader has taken some serious abuse over the last 9 years running Shell R3 (engine was foreign used when installed), still un-opened and running well! I now run the Synthetic R6 in another engine with less mileage. Not sure where you guys are getting your pricing from but perhaps shop around, pricing can vary from one retailer to another.
