Emission Sensors - Disable?

Postby mrreaz » September 8th, 2012, 8:08 pm

Does anyone know how to disable the emission sensors in the corolla?

After i saw the dashboard light coming on i did a diagnostic and was told to remove the catalyst near the exhaust. I took it to the shop and they used a torch to remove the piece with the catalyst and then welded a pipe back in place. However, the light came off for a few days and then the dashboard light came back on. The technician either reset or tried to disable it and the light went off for a while again but then came back on.

I did another diagnostic test and I was told that the emission sensor was the problem and that some of the other emission sensors were bad, but to replace the sensors will cost about $4,000 (price quoted by the firm). I was assured that the it is unnecessary to change these sensors.

The risk here is that if another issue develops I will be unable to know as the warning light is already continuously on.

How can the sensors be disabled so that the warning light on the dashboard no longer shows up?

take out the bulb. since the light is affecting you more than the reason it's coming on.

what exactly is these emissions sensors you speak off?
The only one I can think off is the downstream o2...
One trick that's a hit and miss is to add a spacer to the downstream o2 bung so the sensor does not sit directly in the exhaust tunnel.

when diags indicate a sensor is bad, and you change the sensor, and get the same error, do you ever bother to check the harness?

removing the cat converter WILL trip the check engine light for downstream o2 sensor.

Cat converters are expensive. Well where I am it is.
If your o2 sensor is still good, here's a trick that sometimes work, well usually works.
Cheaper alternative!

Get a spark plug non fouler to space the o2 sensor out of the exhaust pipe.
Only do this on the DOWNSTREAM o2 sensor.
The downstream o2 sensor is the one AFTER the cat converter or furthest away from the engine
