Postby GTiR 14 » July 25th, 2008, 7:18 am

What could have caused this and what can be done to prevent it from happening again?

What did the manifold come off from??

Had a problem once of the engine spiting fire through the manifold and burnt a hole in it...had it repaired/wielded.. think they said that the engine was running too rich and a problem with the timing causing a lost of unburnt gas to get into the exhaust...

Noticed that it broke off closest to the exhaust and the colour shows that there was a lot of additional heat other then exhaust gas... take it to a muffler repair shop and would say what caused it ...good time to get some extractors made...

SR20VET out of the X-Trail GT.

Innitially I too thought that the colour was due to intence heat but I managed to find another one (see pic below) that had the same colour characteristics.

normally cast iron manifolds are very strong and durable but do you have a bonnet scoop or vent? if you do maybe it is a thermal fatigue fracture from water dropping on a hot manifold over a period of time...
thats the only thing i can think of that might crack a stock cast manifold

I was just lucky to get one off a guy doing a VET project. He replaced his with a custom manifold.
