Qg16-qg 18 muffler issue

Postby Anotrin » March 5th, 2015, 5:24 pm

JJust swapped my qg16 for a qg18 engine and tranny. Almera is a local 2005 model. Jus got the car back but there is an issue with the engine over revving. Mashing tmgas will take you to 1st and over rev. Releasing thr gas pedal will shift to 2nd Hiwever no shifting to 3rd.
The mechanic used the qg16 original connectors and harness etc not the ones that came with the engine.
I checked an electrician who said I needed to rewire thr entire car using the qg 18 harness and brain.
I checked a second electrician who after some tests said the tranny was problematic.

Tranny is under warranty for a week again. Please advise whether its an electrical or mechanical issue. Completely clueless as to my next step. Either way its a lotta money to throw out again.

Solved-engine rewired and works boss.
Any advice much appreciated.
Regards

QG 15, 16,18 uses the same tranny & harness.

Run a diagnostic on the transmission. Probably the speed sensor bad.

This could be a sensor prob get a diagnosis done asap .ohh you should also check the position of the throttle position sensor;(tps) . if its set off the position it would amount to the same prob with you stepping of the gas for the gear to change

Probkem solved. Engine rewire sorted out everyting. Qg18 pulls pretty decent I must admit. .
Only issue is that it cuts out at 180 and that I need to install the qg18 manifold as the oxygen sensors are on it.
Muffler guy told.me that I must change all my pipng to suit that slightly bigger engine and his price was 1400!. Some how I feel that a bit unecessary and very reluctant to rid my original muffler.
What do you guys think? Shud I just install the manifold and have it welded to the original one or is it necessary to redo a larger piping?

your qg18 front o2 sensor can't fit where the qg16 02 sensor was?

I guess you'll still have to do the rear 02 sensor...

Dont think so else electrician woukd have used it and wired it up. Back one needs to be done for sure. I need to use the qg18 egr thats why I have to use the 18 manifold as well. there is some tubing that bolts onto the egr there.

I mean just removed the old qg16 sensor and put the qg18 sensor in its place, even if it's for the while...

I used qg15 sensors on ga15 manifolds already, so I highly doubt, a qg18 sensor won't work on a qg16 manifold.

Try it and report back!

No sensors on the stock qg16. I have no problem changing the manifold my only concern is whether to rerun pipes or just join the qg18 mani to the existing pipes.

Hmmm...changing out the piping is the best option to get better performance on the top end. The o2 sensor is no big thing to sort out since that can be installed by cutting and welding on the port for it. If u had a y11 it would have been easy cuz u getting rider 2" mandrel bent pipe with original HKS barrel for 999. Check Deon on the forum he may be able to help.

well thats a first for me....

you definitely gonna need to switch the manifold and then weld a bung for the rear sensor

So is it necessary to redo all the piping when I switch manifolds? Muffler guy quoted 1500 for that job :-|

Just cut and joint pal. Don't waste that money and you won't feel that much difference from it anyways.

yes you do need to install a larger piping exhaust ant the correct manifold .reason being the bigger the engine larger the pipe .otherwise the engine will back pressure and damage even spin Bering .and for the sensor install on the manifold .there is a 24" adaptor already on it just unscrew the o2 sensor and place it back with the other .Google some info on the engine you will see the recommend size pipe to install

My stock pipes are as follows from manifold to first barrel 2". Then after second barrel its approx 1.5" tubing all the way to the muffler. The qg18 manifold has a od of 1.5 at the bend.i read the ideal size for the 18manifold is 2" and without the stock barrels. I however want silence so I would rather keep the stock barrels . Think that it still warrants a complete rerun?

QG 16 uses a closed loop system to monitor A/R ratio thus eliminating the need for an O2 Sensor..nice step I thought for them (Nissan) but they didn't think so lol
