SOL RALLY BARBADOS
What’s new for 2011

Timing equipment: the Barbados Rally Club has made a major investment in new timing equipment, designed and built by British company, ECM Systems Ltd. The system is designed to allow an upgrade in the near future to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which allows automatic recording of competition numbers at various control points; when ECM has finished testing, that will be incorporated into the local system. Sol Rally Barbados Chairman Barry Gale notes: “As this equipment is tested and modified, we edge closer and closer to our long-term goal of near-instant times being posted on our web site. Target date: 2012!"

Satellite navigation: AccuNav Ltd is providing gps support – using John Mann’s BajanNav, the gps map of Barbados - for competitors and spectators. The company has developed two tailor-made POI files – these are ‘overlays’, which identify Points of Interest – to be used in conjunction with BajanNav; one will enable spectators to find the major rally locations easily, while the other will provide additional competitor-specific information, particularly useful for the more than 20 overseas competitors who are new to the event this year.

Incentives for International competitors: in addition to maintaining the stepped scale of discounts for repeat visitors, introduced to celebrate last year’s 20th Anniversary, the Club has offered additional incentives for 2011: these include trophies for the Top 10 two-wheel-drive cars, while the highest-placed overseas crews in front- and rear-wheel-drive cars will have their entry fees reimbursed . . . and the incentives seem to have worked. Of the 16 crews that qualify, eight are new to the event.

Shell V-Power King of the Hill: the venue for this vital ‘shakedown’ the previous weekend has again been changed, although it will once more run on Sunday. This year it will run up Hangman’s Hill to Lion Castle, the first part of what has been the event’s signature Canefield stage in recent years, but is not included in the route for Sol RB11. Service will be at Simpson Motors, Warrens, which will also be the venue for the evening Prizegiving.

Sol Rally Barbados 2011 - route: once again, careful thought has been given to the route, with significant changes on both days, full details of which will be confirmed when the Rally Schedule is published on Wednesday (May 18). In outline, Saturday will feature 13 stages at three venues, including a new test combining elements of two well-known stages in the north of the island; night stages will return. On Sunday, there will be a much later start, with 10 stages at two venues preceding the Sol Aviation SuperSpecial (see below).

Sol Rally Barbados 2011 – Sol Aviation SuperSpecial: as last year, the Sunday SuperSpecial will be included in the results of Sol Rally Barbados, although there will be only one run. The SuperSpecial returns to the Bushy Park race circuit in St Philip, where the Barbados Auto Racing League has pioneered night racing successfully . . . and it will run under floodlights. Cars will be reverse-seeded, and there will be ample time for spectators to make their way to Bushy Park after the final run through Kendal.
