Fiberglass build (updated pg3)

Postby 3stagevtec » May 11th, 2010, 2:47 am

My 1st time building one of these. Enclosure is for my pops Mazda B2500 pickup. The vehicle has limited space so I chose to locate the enclosure in the foot area between the rear seats.

When completed, 3 people should still be able to sit in the rear with the enclosure in place... hopefully...

1st up, the sub.. Sundown E8..

Image

Image

Epic suspension!
Image

The rear cupholder had to go..
Image

Image

Image

Plastic bag and masking tape galore! The rear bench seat was moved forward about ~0.75" to make the mold. That way when completed, the gap will prevent the seat from squeaking against the box.

5 layers of resin and fiberglass..
Image

After an overnight dry..
Image

The sides were marked and cut according to the shape required. The box is being made in such a way that rear passengers can rest their legs comfortable against it. Well, that's the intention anyway..
Image

Image

The right way to cut the resin.. i.e. the personal protection.
Image

Test fiting
Image

with seat in place.. Notice the small gap between the enclosure and seat..

The baffle
Image

The slanted edge allows the factory glove box to open without restriction.. I ran out of hot glue, hence the duct tape..
Image

A cloth was pulled over the sides and soaked in resin.
Image

Simple masking tape was use to keep it in place..
Image

It was then hung upside down so the wet resin soaked cloth would 'balloon' out a bit and form a nice smooth shape.
Image

Image

So far, the sides are coming out as intended. I doubt it would be intrusive to any rear passengers..
Image

as soon as the cloth dries firm, I will put down a few layers of fiberglass for strength and see how much volume i end up with..

Sundown recommends a 0.6cu.ft enclosure tuned 30Hz for the E8.. Hopefully, i'll be close to that.. If not, a 0.28cu.ft sealed (Qtc - 0.7) is recommended..

I estimated it to be around 0.5cu.ft but somehow it 'looks' bigger than that.. Once it comes near the 0.6cu.ft mark, i will use an external 2.5" PVC port and tune it accordingly.

My dad is not much of an SQ person, he and his brothers had a DJ back in their day, so he tends to prefer loud rather than quality.. ported would definitely be more to his liking..

His front stage uses the factory door speakers (I really like the tone / midbass you get from them) and a pair of PA tweets. I can't remember the brand, but they are run off a '3 way' passive crossover (LP / HP and rear fill) I got from SR..

nice! like i better contract you to do my van too!

If it's one thing, the stock speakers in the b2500 give you impressive midbass, especially with a decent quality head unit.

When I'm sanding fg I use a full disposable cover-all and a full face mask like yours though... I don't play with that sh!t at all

Great job so far!

if its firing upwards, is it too late to countersink the sub so there is less chance of contact with a foot?

The baffle is really small, so it would be difficult.. I will look into countersinking the sub though once it's possible and there is enough internal volume..

Will post a vid when completed..

yeah, or a decent grill to prevent the sub from being damaged with someone's foot and it can happen very easy

im not sure how/if it will work for ur application...but what about a 3/4 ring over the existing baffle on the top..and fiber and filler the edge of the ring and taper it to the existing baffle
it will also give it a nice custom look rather than the flat top

Do you have the specs on this sub? I can't find any info on the website.

those SA-8 subs are supposedly some of the baddest 8" around. If you like #s i saw somewhere that with one SA-8 sundownz hit 150db or 151db or some, with 1 8".

it was on an SAW3500D though.

Looking good. Those E8 gave a nice flattish response when i modeled them on WinIsd even in the ported enclosure.

Pioneer Premier Class A 4CH amplifier.. 2CHs bridged to run the sub, the other 2CHs run the front stage and rear fill through a passive crossover..

75Wrms per channel, which is plenty!
