Yea I think speedmelter has said it just as I would. From your equipment, I think just a preamp will be necessary here and don't hold back on the $$$ for your headunit.

different models have different features. A model will help us a bit in giving advice.

basic units are just basic units, more advanced one will have fancy display, adjustable high and low pass crossovers, equalizers (not the shiddy 3 band stuff), 4 volt pre outs, probably USB and maybe bluetooth.
No need for a preamp with such a deck.

yea if the pre outs are 3 way i believe they call it u wont need a preamp. i think you should sell the deck you have and get a nice usb one that can save you the $ to spend on a preamp and cross.. u cud even use the power of the deck to play dem tweeters so u wont hada worry abt burning them. the pioneer usb ones are like from 9 to 1200.. you cant go wrong wid a good deck, itl hold its value and prob make that lil system look and sound much better than a shitty one with preamp. u have decent amps and speakers so just get a nice deck and u good to go.. and by nice i dont mean those flashy dvd shet decks like soundstream and pyrimid

or nervewrecker i was saying itl prob be necessary depending on what kinda outputs the deck has... hence the question

Don't tell the guy to look for a nice usb deck. There are usb decks for all $800 that are basic and have 2 volt pre-outs.

Instead, the OP should look for a headunit that has 4 volt pre-outs, regardless of whether or not it can play usb.

crossovers are around 650 or so
basic usb decks are around 800-900

so around 1500 for that combo

you could get a pretty good usb deck with a built in crossover setup for around 1200 and get the ease of having one less equipment (crossover)

man just get a preamp for abt 300 dollars.. the soundstream or power acoustic. forget abt crossover, the crossover on the amps will have to suffice for ur situation. the deck u got duz it have RCA outputs?

if you got to go with a preamp go with the soundstream 5xo over the normal pwm20 and such

they have a lot more line drive and the quality is better Imo

man have u been reading the comments?

a pre amp serves the purpose of sending 4 volt signals to the amps and provide a little volume control of the frequency ranges.
the crossover reconstitutes the signal sent into bandwidths so that each speaker can play desired freq ranges....

if you cant afford the deck that serves both those functions ur alternative wud be to use the crossover on the amp and buy a preamp. just buy the preamp and later on you can mayb buy other stuff.
