WTK: Suitable enclosure volume for more than one sub

Postby theblitz » August 27th, 2008, 12:23 am

If a recommended enclosure vol for a sub is say between 2.5-3cu.ft. if you use multiple subs in a single enclosure how do you get a suitable volume for the box? NB: not talkin bout tuning here jus box vol. to begin with.

Say I would normally use 2.5 cu.ft. for one sub and I wanna use two in one ported box.... :?:

^^^ well that's basically what I did for my last box design but I wanted to know if its correct. I was searching for an existing thread but found none. For sealed I wouldn't have them sharing the space but ported thats what I want to do.

Its an experiment I was supposed to do. But never got the time. I did 18/20 in sub bass last event. Im not touching that enclosure till end of season.

99.9% of the people say if 1 sub needs 1 cuft, 2 subs need 2 cuft. Im the0.1% that say this aint so for a shared space enclosure. I just dont have the time to test my hypothesis.

sry I think I should have been a bit more specific (or shut up  ) anyway... What makes you think a pair of subs in a shared space enclosure wont simplely need twice the recogmended space of one sub?

If so how do you plan to accomodate the second sub?

I have a slight doubt in my mind about it also... due to the nature of air and its properties (elasticity and compressiveness.... for lack of better words) I don't think that it will need the full double volume for two subs. Its the answer I'm looking for

there are no separation walls that confine x cu.ft to any one speaker. perhaps the box will seem larger than x cu.ft. but smaller than 2x cu.ft. for each sub (due to the action of the second sub)?

boom, the two subs may just need a little less volume than doubling it.

Its just an observation I made, of the subwoofers performance, after building 2 different odd shaped enclosures, with 3 different pairs of identical subs.

Its a hypothesis. Not all hypothesis result in a prooved theory.
