i keep telling you guys to make the sbn trip

the connections you will make will be more than worht it
the technical people you get to meet and disucssions you can have as wll as up close inspections on installs beat any discussion with pics on any forum

i know i have much to learn and hence the forum..i stood corrected when gave me his views and didnt argue..i was speaking from my experience with the JL woofer and i also learned off the forum is that alot of people are always quick to blame equipment an say somthing wrong with it, when truely the flaw could be with the install

I have some pics of the JL Audio facility from our visit in march. I'll post up some when i reach home later..
Their quality control checks are amazing, each subwoofer is inspected and tested individually before packaged.

JL's Manville Smith of is a somewhat regular poster on the diymobileaudio.com forums. If surround tear on the W7s is a common occurrence, perhaps it could be raised with him there. Who knows - maybe it can't stand up to Trini-heat :). It might be a good idea to collect some data beforehand from all local W7 owners possible, e.g. Model, S/N, Purchase Date, Is the surround torn, and if so, the date it became noticeable, first to confirm if it IS actually a common problem, and then see if there are any commonalities.

but dont rule out the abuse locally

i have seen it personally where people boast about how much power thier sub "handles"


"peak power" for some means daily driven power


serial number on the sub will determine date of manufacturing as well as dealer it was purchased at

it can also determine if there was a bad batch of surrounds based on returns if any to jl

The original poster did say that he did not abuse his W7 though, and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Could be an install thing too - the installation process for a W7 IS a bit different to most other subs. I wouldn't expect it to take over 2 years for a problem caused by an install error to show up though.

^^thats what i meant when i said the guy has been usin it for 2yrs i dont tink a install problem can cause this all of a sudden.is it possible that the heat in the trunk of a car can deteriorate the strength of the foam surround?dont kno jus askin.

Explain what you mean by the install process? I purchased the CLS110RG-W7 Pro Wedge. Followed the instructions which accompanied the wedge and the JL 500/1v2 amp regarding attenuation and voltage testing as i paid too much money to loose the sub to an improper install.

I'm starting to lean toward the heat being a problem... it is plausible to think that the heat would have an impact on the foam... wish i recognized that much earlier....

is there something that can be used to maintain the foam in that matter?

tru..but i dont tink the man wud hav water leaking on his expensive equipment like that..lol..it can jus be the heat deteriorating the strength of the foam after a while.

That's a shame, w7's are supposed to be designed for the car environment with huge excursion capabilities albeit on a KW of power, jl has had issues with w6v2's, w7's and a bunch of w3v3's with suspension issues. I think, even if abused, the driver should fail thermally before anything happens to the suspension. That's the case in drivers in adire's shivas, keep feeding power- stop getting louder, doesn't bottom,barely distorts till the coil just gives out..and then you can just recone it yourself :/...but of course they're different beasts.

i have had the same problem with two 10 w7s. I think its not made to last long in Trinidad's environment. But they hit hard and sound great. I have had one done over with an atomic suspension and its working well up to today after about a year with a 500/1 on it. Try it out and see as you might not have much options.
