Renewing rear wheel bearing assembly. NZE with drum or disc

Postby ramishrrr » February 22nd, 2014, 9:26 pm

The pics were loaded last for first.

1. Jack up rear with front wheels and other rear wheel chucked.Transmission in Park. Do not depend on your jack for your safety. (If you do not have a jack-stand, at least put the rear tyre under the car. Safety first.)
2. Drop parking brake and remove wheel.
3. Disconnect battery. Unplug ABS counter behind hub. (Remove caliper if its disc brakes)
4. Remove disc or drum, using a 12mm bolt to ease it from the hub. There are 2 threaded holes for this. See bolt inserted in Pic. Bearing 1.
5. Remove the four 12mm bolts at the back of the hub.(This is what holds the entire rear wheel to the subframe.....even at 110MPH !!!)
6. With some dexterity, the entire hub/bearing assembly can be removed, replaced and bolted back.
7. As the pics show, the plate with the shoes will shift from position, but can easily be put back.
8. Disc brakes carry shoes for the Parking Brake, so the disc incorporates a drum too.
9. Drum brakes use the same shoes for the Parking Brake, but they are usually bigger.
10. When the disc/drum is re-installed, remove the rubber plug, turn the hub to line up with the thumbwheel adjuster to make slight adjustments, so that the drum turns until you feel a slight resistance. Use a small screwdriver to turn the adjuster. You will feel the clicks. Use a flashlight if necessary. This will take up the slack on your parking brake.

Note how the old bearing assembly shows sign of scorching.

Peace.
RR.

^^ Good post Ramish however never leave the caliper to hang from the break line as it can damage the inner lining. Use a piece of wire & tie it to the spring.

The park brake consists of shoes and the main rear brake are discs. This is the same set up as the Honda Accord.

My Fielder is the Z Aerotourer. ZZE123 model. 1.8 L engine.
It comes with rear discs.

The NZE141 Fielder should have a similar setup as the NZE121, although I am not 100% sure. If it does, then this post should apply.
Thanks for the advice Chemical. Appreciate it.
Peace,
Regards,
Ramish.

I was a bit disappointed with the service life of the original bearing assemblies. It was around 107,000Kms that they went bad. This is supposed to be Toyota quality and durability.
My previous car, a B14 from brand new chalked up 135,000kms before I sold it. Never had bearing problems !
The original bearing from Toyota Trinidad Ltd. run into the thousands, so, when I found out that the aftermarket at Faiz Auto in Marabella was $350 I decided to go for it. And it was the bearing assembly with the ABS counter. It took just about 10 mins to remove, and 10 mins for re-installation. Easy pickings.
Since installation, the car has chalked up 15,000kms.
For TT$350 and 20 minutes renewal time, I can change one every Monday morning. Believe me !
Peace.

Nice ched opie.

Looking for rear wheel bearings for the szp10 2 door hatch. I know you had the rs version to this. You know any places that stock these wheel bearings by chance? Also, is it the same as the four door variant?

Thanks man

I note with interest the comments being made in this thread.
I however would suggest a little research into the risks associated with using 'low quality' hubs.
The suggestion being made is done with the greatest respect, being aware that contributors to this thread are individuals who have some merchanical awareness.
At the very minimum users will know the possible consequences of their purchase decision up front.
I have observed quite a few separated hubs on clients vehicles over the years and sometimes wonder about these strange accidents when vehicles just seem to deviate from intended path.
The fact is you get what you pay for.

has anyone ever consider converting from 4 hole to 5 hole rotors on the fielder 144/ 124 4WD? since the rear bearings are almost impossible to get. The Pontiac Vibe and the Toyota matrix are quite easy to get on amazon but, guess what they are 5 stud type.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CTU ... K0PO3GJYXY
