CMRA Round Two competition takes place over the June 20-21 weekend at WallerfieldIn less than a month, fans will be able to experience the best-ever Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association (TTASA) circuit racing meet, as this year the stars have aligned as never before at Wallerfield. The track is scheduled to receive its first resurfacing– a racecar driver’s dream– before the June 20-21 2015 event. This means that the fastest Group 4 cars in the Caribbean will finally run at full potential, with
last year’s 41.69-second track record on the line. Fans will also be treated to a new weekend pass, priced at just $150 to allow entry on the Saturday 20th Practice Day and Sunday 21st Race Day following the Labor Day holiday. Fans attending the event will receive one of 3500 commemorative CMRC 2015 magazines on a first come, first serve basis.
Big guns like Guyana’s Kristian Jeffery and Trinidad’s Kristian Boodoosingh, both in 4WD Mitsubishi Evolutions will surely appreciate the new smoother, faster surface, which will allow them to put their high-powered machines to the full test of man and machine for the very first time at Wallerfield.
Originally earmarked for May, the track paving was delayed due a National Gas Company (NGC) safety request for a security fence around their gas metering location, along with EMA clearances. The Ministries of Works and Sport, and eTeck have been working with TTASA to resolve these issues. Paving is scheduled to start this week.
If everything goes according to plan, a test and tune meet will be held within the first two weeks of June to allow the field of 50+ local racers to fine-tune their race cars. Competitor registration and race licensing begins on June 3. The Supercar exhibition race for road cars will also make a welcome return, capped to a maximum of 25 race-licensed entries. Practice will be needed as a larger number of regional competitors are expected this year from the other Caribbean Motor Racing Association (CMRA) member nations with confirmations from Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Guyana, spread over four Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) Groups– Group 2, Group 3, Group 4 and the return of Motorcycles in the new Group Super Stock which allows participation of up to 600cc bikes, where the real competition will come from Guyana. There will also be three local racing groups i.e. Group 1 to 3 Local, providing for the normal road cars to participate. From early checks all classes are expected to be full, providing loads of action for fans to enjoy. Between races and for the grand finale, drifting competitors and clubs, in association with the Trinidad & Tobago Drifting Association (TTDA), will burn rubber like never before providing some real daredevil moves from our own local drifting experts.
Seating and amenities have been improved for this year’s meet. At least four large stands with will be installed for the comfort of general admission patrons as they enjoy a view of the complete circuit from the Team Tigers straightaway, in addition to the main stands at the hairpin corner.
The VIP stands, which command a $1200 ticketed entry for patrons that want to be closer to the excitement, along with catered meals, finger foods and premium drinks, now has a new layout at the eastern end of the circuit known as the Tom Miller top corner. The pits will now take up residence near the DaCosta Jones chicanes, allowing a much larger area for hosting more competitors and allowing safer pit access during endurance races.
Food and beverages will be on sale and patrons will be allowed to attend with their coolers and food items. As most professional spectators know by now, comfortable clothing, sunblock and staying hydrated are all good ideas. Get there early to get a good parking spot and keep your chosen space.
