Both have comparable specs, output and i can say for the 6a it is reliable, and i wouldn't doubt Toyota reliability. For tuning the 1jz will be able to take more boost in stock form. In Trinidad parts for both engines are easily sourced a la bamboo.
The newer ijz with vvti are efficient, 6a can be gas guzzlers.
I would still say 6a for the obvious reason of me being a triple diamond fanatic.
But for you the deciding factor should be platform.
