1st character (letter) identifies the type of drive train system -
F = front wheel drive. E.g Lancer, Galant
R = rear wheel drive. E.g L300, 4x2 L200 pickups
W = All wheel drive\4-wheel drive with no range selector. E.g. Evolution, RVR
V= 4 wheel drive with range selector. E.g. L200, Pajero
Second character (number) identifies the number of forward gears
4 = 4 forward gears
5 = 5 forward gears
1 = CVT
Third character (letter) identifies the type of transmission
A = Automatic
M = Manual
C = Automatic CVT
Fourth character (letter or number) identifies the family of gearbox
Fifth character identifies model number of gearbox in that family
so V5MT1 - 2001 - 2005 L200
