I currently have one. Very good all round vehicle. Keep in that that the transmission not like the ordinary and it needs special care. Change the transmission fluid on time and only with the recommended grade of fluid (SP III).
Try to get a history of the car you are buying, especially the transmission and locally, people tend to abuse the CVT transmission that these CS lancers carry. Find out if any work was done on it.

Other than that, you should be fine. All this is irrelevant though, if the vehicle is manual.

Replacing tranny is about 8k if buying FU.

Engine upgrade depends on you/budget/etc.

A good conversion is 4g18 (1.6cc), it should be able to work with your current tranny as well

The price to replace the transmission should it fail is approximately 7,8gran as ZeroOne pointed, and that is you buy it foreign used. If you are talking brand new, let's not go there. Let's just say that it's better off you buy another car. Diamond Motors will suck you dry. Don't believe me? get a quote yourself.
If you are looking to have it repaired, it depends on the damage to it. If we are looking at a complete rebuild, it will cost like 7gran, change bearings and flush the transmission, $5,500. Other than that the solenoids could need servicing. This will cost you around $1,200.
If such does happen, which we forbid will, Jenton's Transmission Specialist in Aranguez is a reputable repair garage for your transmission to be repaired.

About an engine upgrade, the 4G18 is a direct bolt up I believe (1600cc).I could be wrong. Someone else can con firm this. Good gas mileage and takes 3-3&1/2 quarts of engine oil.

you said the engine is a 13cc you mean 1300cc.
the 1300 engine comes with a normal tranny , not a cvt which is only available in 1.6 models.
