215-45-17 Question

Postby Parvin » May 29th, 2014, 9:50 pm

Little problem here guys.

I've been using 215-45-17 profile tires ever since I put rims on the car, that's about 5-6 years now, and never had any issues.

Changed all four shocks and the steering rack today and went to align and camber. After leaving, I had to make a left turn on my journey when I felt like I ran over something. And out to check and realized the front tire was busted ... With a long 'cut' on the inner side. Swapped on the spare and went to the tyre shop to buy a replacement. Got it put on and went on my way. Stopped at the grocery and when exiting the compound, had to lock left again ... Same thing happened, felt like I ran over something and the tyre cut AGAIN.

Came home and tried looking for the problem to which I think is that it's rubbing on the inner fender where the rack ends protrude.

So I'm kinda confused as to how this only started happening AFTER so long and AFTER aligning and cambering ???

215 45 is a fairly wide tyre dependent on what U have it on. When you should do is remove the wheel, and look at the inner classis for traces of rubber deposits to determine where it rubbed.

Did that, and went back by the alignment shop. Told me that probably the steering rack I changed was shorter. Is that possible?

It's possible for the rack to be badly realigned. Meaning that's it's not centered wrt amount of turns.

Eg stock is 4 turns to either side.
Yours might be 3 to max on left and 5 to right. Meanings it might over turn and touch the chassis.

My explanation is poor but I hope you understand.
Had a similar problem before
