Hi DeepThought
It depends on the mileage of the engine. You know if it was rebuilt, 60,000 mile service, etc.
With that being said, once you can verify that the engine on the whole was maintained according to the manufacturer's specs., for e.g. oil change at 10,000 miles or two to three months use the 10w40 or 15w40. Even if its a recently bought engine...as you indicated, you can use the 10w40 mineral oil.
However, I would suggest that you service the engine first....timing belt change, water pump, front & rear oil seals, cam seals etc. run the mineral oil, and after the first oil change switch to a full syntec.
You should change your oil as per manufacturer's specs...in your case every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or 20,000 km or 2 - 4 months depending on vehicle use.
Mineral Oils you can used:
Castrol
Shell Helix
Synthetic Oils:
Amsoil
