WTK: Operating Temperature

Postby rb25 » August 24th, 2014, 12:33 am

I recently installed an electrical temperature gauge. It is a short sweep gauge between 100 deg F - 250 deg F. The brand is Autometer Sport Comp series. It is installed in a Subaru Imperza Anesis. It has an EL 15 engine.

The temperature reading is just below 100 def F. That converts to about 38 deg C.

That has to be wrong? I made a run from chag to gulf with AC on and the gauge didn't even move.

Can someone point me in the write direction.

What temperature are you trying to measure?

Unless you measuring atmospheric temperature, I would venture and say that its not working correctly.

I feel he wants to get the coolant temp reading since that car doesn't have a coolant temp gauge on the dash.

Did you use an adapter for the temp sensor off the radiator hose or did you tap a wire off the ECU?

I'm guessing that you tapped off the ECU and the wire may be the wrong one.

He needs to use the sensor packaged with the gauge with an adapter and tap into the hot radiator hose (I have seen men install on the cold hose  )

I am trying to measure the coolant temperature. I installed it with the radiator hose adapter and the supplied temperature sensor. It is positioned on the top radiator hose.

Sounds like its installed correctly. Check the ground on the adapter and make sure its secure.

The gauge is grounded correctly. I connected the light to the switch. The ignition in connected cause I could see the needle move on start up. And the wire for the temperature sensor is properly secured.

When u say to ground the adapter. What do u mean? To actually run a wire from the adapter to the body of the car?

That would make sense because on the adapter itself there is a small screw. It is on the edge of the area where the u have to screw in the sensor.

Good good. Ground that little screw with a wire from the engine block and see if that makes a difference....

Yeah you may also have to ground the adaptor. I had to do it on mine for my autometer gauge to work.
