Volkswagen Bora

Postby Trinicatalan » October 4th, 2012, 3:12 pm

I'm very interested in buying a 2003/4 Bora in the coming months. Is there any advice u guys can offer on the cost of maintenance, parts, tuning, etc and how it compares to a 2001 honda civic es8 for example?

Great car. No worries about carjacking (yet) parts not much more expensive than civic. you just need a good experienced reliable mechanic.

pay attention to mileage and if/when major tuneups was done by previous owner. one of the major issues with these cars is transmission. if oil and tranny filter was not changed on time this leads to serious trouble! another major issue is cooling system.( mostly plastic and not very durable. )

i have new parts and as well i am starting used. i have a bora and a golf coming to parts out. someone already paid for the bora as it is a 2.0 liter.

thanks for the advice bro. yeah, from what i've read the car doesn't seem to come with many major issues. i figure it's just negligent owners who don't monitor their vehicles and talk bad about the car afterwards.
this is gonna be my first car in trinidad (I owned a toyota camry before in the US) so i hope it's not going to be a liability to maintain.
Question though, i'm a noob so forgive me, but how can i monitor the car's service/tuneup history? should the owner provide me with receipts? it's not like we have carfax here! lol

huh... bro... unless they have it logged in a service book, or it was company maintained so u see proof of the history, it will all be heresay. u have to trust them if they said they changed tranny oil at 50k and 100k etc etc.

probably not a straight up "wash", but it can be sprayed down and degreased. you don't really want water running by those electronics

The Bora, lovely car as Gool said, make sure the fluids, brake and especially the transmission fluid has been routinely changed. Additionally check for improper door actuators function. Other than that a solid vehicle.
