I will begin by saying that everyone is already on the path. at the moment of birth, the path begins. however, at whichever stage one turns a blind eye to the path, so too does the path turn a blind eye to him/her. there will be ppl with naturally higher inclinations than others, but without recognizing what the purpose of existence is one can find themselves stagnating and reaching no higher. or moving very slowly.
Most ppl leave this search for the end of their lives. this is ILL ADVISED.. for one.. it is easier.. much easier to earn universal points the younger and less corrupted of heart and mind one is. as ppl grow old, these questions start reaching them as they realize they can no longer avoid the thoughts of death and the afterlife and the Spiritual truth of man. in many ways they will begin to be forced into communion with their spirit by their spirit in an attempt to 'light the candle' before the flesh is entirely too corrupted to operate.
From a Jewish perspective, the path to enlightenment has been laid out rather plainly for I a samadhi practitioner. but is still confounding to many Rabi's today. This path has been very well described in the Sephirot System. Also known as the Tree of Life, it consists of 10 Sephirot and 1 Hidden Sephirot known as the 'Abyss/Darkness'.. Daath.
Here i will lay out the meaning of the Sephirot and it should be clear to anyone to see how similar it is to the Buddhist 'Path to Enlightenment'.. as well as other cultures. The Path is a spiritual journey, where one seeks more and more in-depth communication with their own Spirit, and an enduring personal relationship with God. There is 'I' the child consciousness of the spirit. this child consciousness is known as the Ego in eastern doctrines. it is the materialisation of consciousness.. but actually comes from a source of Pure and much greater consciousness. The Spirit or Higher Self! Thus there is Brain intellect.. and Spirit/Soul Intellect. and most of us.. when we say 'I', we are referring the to physical brain consciousness. this is because of the train of thought science has lead us to negotiate.
the 11 sephirot are the milestones on the path to enlightenment. but look at this, they are upside down. this is a common little riddle in ancient secrets. it is an ascribing to the in/out/in/out weaving of primal forces. moving down to go up etc etc.

2 Chokhmah-"Wisdom"
3 Binah-"Understanding"
4 Chesed-"Kindness"
5 Gevurah-"Severity"
6 Tiferet-"Beauty"

if you read them backwards from number 10 go up. this is how you climb the tree of life by passing through these stages in evolution of mind and understanding.
Keter is between Chokmah and Binah (with Chokmah on the right and Binah in the left). keter is the pineal gland with binah and chokmah being the left and right hemispheres of the brain. it is a direct reference to meditation as ive said long before. all religious scripture link back to ancient eastern philosophies and doctrines and even myths. one story, one goal for the human race. many different ways of putting it across forming multiple religions and cultures.
the tree of life is obviously the chakra system. lighting the eye, is lighting the lamp/candle. when this is done, you will know that u never die. ur spirit has become self perpetuating! this is the teaching that must be brought to all mankind! we are born spiritually blind. and if we stay blind we will go into the next life blind as well. and in such a state it is just as if u do not exist. u would not be able to hear your own thoughts. when we complete the full brain development necessary, the vessel of flesh completes the eye and it is opened permanently. it is the same as "the completion of the temple". the "replacing of the pyramid capstone". "the lighting of the candle".
the arrangement of the dna creates the spirit, and it grows and learns through the body as it interfaces with it's environment. remember it is a brand new independent consciousness being born. they must work together, to open the eye so that the spirit will gain sight. this is our task and mission.
the sephirot is meant to represent a tree as it grows from the roots. we start from the bottom. i will now put it in order for you:
Malkuth - sits at the bottom and represents God's Divine Bride. this is to take up the path of righteousness. this gains the attention of the Holy Spirit. and the test begins if u are earnest in reducing your sins over time.
Yesod - The sephirah of Yesod translates spiritual concepts into actions that unite us with God. - wikipedia. this is about the choices we make in our lives and the good we do for others as well as our regard for nature. everything, like not littering etc.
Hod - is the stage of learning to trust the intuition. it is the growth in the belief of the hidden and unseen through faith and testing.
Netzach - is the understanding of infinity and the beginning of wisdom.
Tiferet - this stage is a stage of great confidence in the intuition. it is the stage where one has begun to understand the role of compassion and emotions in general in becoming of balanced mind. this makes you appear bright and smart and focused.
Gevurah - one has reached the point of resolve and great faith
Chesed - understanding true love
Binah and Chokmah reaches peak balance and lights the candle (keter).. or activates and opens the pineal.. and in so doing your spiritual eye. it is not just a physical growth development. but a spiritual one.
When the Pineal becomes developed via the various practices and is finally activated, this lights the lamp of the spiritual eye. in essence.. we are born spiritually blind and with weak vision and focus. the physical development of the eye then opens our spiritual eye, bringing us eternal life in the Spirit as promised in ALL religions and cultures..
The physical development is not only a strength of body, but a strength of Mind. studying the brain you will notice that there are different areas of activity relating to various areas of the brain. we have a Logical brain and a Creative/emotional Brain (left and right hemispheres). through practice, we are able to develop our faculties in both areas of the brain. and must aim to develop them all and to be eventually controlled.
Logic Building:
This is done simply by playing with numbers, also sand, and any things that carry measurement. children who spend alot of time playing in the sand as they interface with particles, and volumes are growing an innate natural mathematics system. as they grow older and start playing with numbers and number systems they develop their logical faculties the more they play or PRACTICE.
Creative Mind Building:
This is accomplished by venting in every arena one's inner feelings and translating them to logical/physical/ real world descriptions.. like music, painting, poetry and all of the creative arts.
Emotional Intelligence Building:
This is done simply as all things and as the two previous.. PRACTICE. by practicing compassion and empathy we become better at it. but it is not all for nothing. it is not to build these things for building them sake.. there is a reason and purpose why this must be done.
All areas must be built and developed. neglect not one or the other or fail to achieve a balanced Brain. this is the physical aspect being built through these practices. naturally it makes one seem quite intelligent as these gifts make us human. and those who can and wield such gifts with mastery know that they bring hidden blessings with them. things u would not understand or see without them in real life.
The idea always was and always will be about balance. to be logical alone is to be a robot which only takes commands and cannot think for itself. to be creative alone will create personalities of absolute non-conformism and may be viewed by others as delusional (unless their art-form becomes respected, then they are viewed as eccentric), especially when mixed with uncontrolled emotions, and in some cases one does and can become delusional. and it is all because of mental balance. too much creativity and not enough logic is out of balance. same for too much logic and too little creativity or emotional intelligence. without balance the Spirit will not be revealed. the aim then is to perform a sort of balancing act as you develop the various areas of the brain through practice.
practice truth and truth will follow you, you will learn to identify truth because birds of a feather flock together, the spirit of truth will flock to you. practice lies and deception will follow you and be all around you. this is the cycle of life and the works of karma, the Secret Law of attraction etc. and it is your own spirit which deceives the flesh for one who chooses to be deceptive.
A friend of mine (Dominicus) has put together a nice thread which aims at simplifying the conscious progression as it appears to the observer, during their ascent to spiritual awareness. i will reference it only because i think it was so well put together, that it may be redundant a bit for me to detail it in my own way for purposes of explanation.

The Lord is thy Rod and thy Staff to the faithful servants, righteous and upright. for them there is nothing to fear. others who dont believe in God as a Supreme Creator and give him his praise as it is due, may have quite grotesque experiences. this valley of the shadow of death, is none other than Daath, the darkness and the abyss. Closed eye meditation/prayer.
Believe in the Trinity, but know that God is one, and we only see him in dualism because of our split perception. if thine eye is single then you will be granted entrance into Heaven. and it is just as described. this single eye, is the third eye chakra. a literal eye, which contains the parts of an eye, hidden within our skull. the very center of both of brains and is known as the pineal gland in biological studies. this is the fulcrum or balancing point of the seesaw of mind.
