Solar Eclipse to affect Eid al-Fitr moon sighting

Traditionally, the sighting of the moon is used to affirm the start and conclusion of Ramadan.

This year's Shawwal crescent moon visibility will be affected by the Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8.

Astronomers first predicted that the first day of Eid al-Fitr would be April 9. But on April 8, after sunset, the new moon will not be visible near the western horizon because of the Solar Eclipse.

As a result, most Islamic countries are expected to see the crescent moon after sunset on April 9. Thus, according to Harper's Bazaar Arabia, April 10 is probably the first day of Shawwal and Eid al-Fitr.

it's a lunar calendar
so based on moon sightings to start each month

Yes so is Easter and Jewish holidays. Because the lunar calendar is cyclical and therefore predictable. But why is Eid dependent on seeing the moon?

In ancient times, the lunar calendar was determined by actual sighting of the new moon. Of course, in 2024 it's entirely possible to predict if the moon can be sighted based on the age of the new moon and the angle wrt the horizon. In Islam, in order to determine the start of the month, the moon must be sighted locally or a sighting is corroborated in the general region by reputable persons. In our part of the world, the moon can be seen when it is approximately 18 hours old. Since the new moon is born approximately 630 pm on Monday, the sighting will be done on Tuesday at sunset by which time the moon will be about 24 hours old and easily seen. Hence the reason why it was easy to fix the holiday on Wednesday.

Note that the Islamic Calendar is a 30 day calendar. The sighting of the moon is to see if the particular month will end in 29 days or make the full 30. If we do not see the moon, we cannot fast for more than 30 days. Eid will always be the day after 30 days of fast, regardless if the moon is sighted or not.

There are 12 lunar months, however a lunar month can be either 29 or 30 days. This means that a lunar year is about 10 or 11 days shorter than a solar year.

This is why every year Eid is always 10 or 11 days earlier than the previous year. So this year Eid is the 10th April, next year it will be about 31st March, the following year 20th March, etc. So it IS fairly predictable.

Because Eid is celebrated on the Ist of the 10th lunar Month, it will move across the entire year. Other religions holidays ... Divali, Easter, etc is based on the lunar calender but restricted to a particular time of the year. So Divali will always be either October or November, Easter will always be in either March or April. Eid will move across the 12 months of the year.
