it's a lunar calendar
so based on moon sightings to start each month
In ancient times, the lunar calendar was determined by actual sighting of the new moon. Of course, in 2024 it's entirely possible to predict if the moon can be sighted based on the age of the new moon and the angle wrt the horizon. In Islam, in order to determine the start of the month, the moon must be sighted locally or a sighting is corroborated in the general region by reputable persons. In our part of the world, the moon can be seen when it is approximately 18 hours old. Since the new moon is born approximately 630 pm on Monday, the sighting will be done on Tuesday at sunset by which time the moon will be about 24 hours old and easily seen. Hence the reason why it was easy to fix the holiday on Wednesday.Habit7 wrote:Duane 3NE 2NR wrote:Habit7 wrote:Anybody has a YouTube video explaining why this is so inexact?

Yes so is Easter and Jewish holidays. Because the lunar calendar is cyclical and therefore predictable. But why is Eid dependent on seeing the moon?

There are 12 lunar months, however a lunar month can be either 29 or 30 days. This means that a lunar year is about 10 or 11 days shorter than a solar year.Habit7 wrote:Duane 3NE 2NR wrote:Habit7 wrote:Anybody has a YouTube video explaining why this is so inexact?
