The only disappointing thing about the TV series is the visual scope. They really haven't been able to capture the real size and tone of the various settings due to obvious budgetary constraints. Westeros should look and feel as big as Middle Earth in the movies.
But that's not a big disappointment so far. The interactions between the characters are the meat of the books, and those are done fantastically on the series. The TV series also spares us Martin's sometimes-clunky prose.
The biggest downgrade will definitely be later in this season, where we see the first real full-scale battle in the books. And dread...it was epic in the book. Epic in the true sense of the word, and much more interesting than two huge armies clashing on a field.
That said, the books are good and more than worth a read. The first three at least.
