Government's policy of distributing laptops to form one secondary school pupils has positively affected Trinidad and Tobago's rank in the World Economic Forum Gobal Information Technology Report 2010-2011, says Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
On her return from Brazil last week, Persad-Bissessar, at a press conference in the VIP lounge at Piarco International Airport, said T&T jumped 16 places in the ratings, something that no other country has done before.
"I have been told that no other country has done that in one year and it was mainly because of the laptops for the students," said the PM.
According to the report which is posted on the World Economic Forum's website http://www.weforum.org this country in 2009-2010 was ranked at 79. This changed over the past year with a new ranking of 63.
The website stated that, with a record coverage of 138 economies worldwide, the report remains the world's most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT (information communications technology) on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.
"The Networked Readiness Index (NRI) featured in the report examines how prepared countries are to use ICT effectively on three dimensions: the general business, regulatory and infrastructure environment for ICT; the readiness of the three key societal actors—individuals, businesses and governments—to use and benefit from ICT; and their actual usage of available ICT."
Sweden ranked number one of all countries surveyed.
Persad-Bissessar reminded the media that there was much criticism of the laptop programme.
"Remember they said they will steal the laptops and they will mash them up. I saw that it was stolen and they got it back very quickly because of the technology we have put into it."
She said when a student takes the laptop home, "everybody else in the home gets to use so that has lifted us 16 points on the technology index compiled by the World Economic Forum".
Persad-Bissessar also reminded that the Commonwealth Society ranked this country as the third best country in the Commonwealth to grow up as a girl.
