Acting Prime Minister Winston Dookeran had to literally hitch a ride to Piarco International Airport yesterday to bid Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar good-bye.

Persad-Bissessar, who arrived at the airport by helicopter, left for Australia to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2011 where she will also be handing over the chair of commonwealth to Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.
Dookeran arrived at the VIP lounge of the airport after Persad-Bissessar concluded a news conference and left for her British Airways flight.

Dookeran said he had car problems on the way to the airport and was thankful a good Samaritan, Andrew DeVignes, stopped to give him a drop.
"Well, on the way, my car stalled on the highway, between Trincity and here, and I had to get out and wave down someone to bring me here," said Dookeran.
Dookeran said DeVignes was kind enough to stop and help him, but "that was after a good few people pass by, eh...he brought me here, and I unfortunately reached a bit late".

"I will give him (DeVignes) a call; he was kind enough to drop me here and tell me in these times, he admire anybody who wants to lead...and I thank him," said Dookeran.
Dookeran said there was a bit of misunderstanding as he thought he had to reach the airport at 5.15 p.m.

Persad-Bissessar herself arrived late at the airport. She landed on the tarmac at 4.55 p.m. via helicopter, then had a ten-minute news conference before taking her flight.
She said she was leaving with a heavy heart, but she stressed she is leaving the Government in capable hands.

"I am leaving the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in very capable hands, in the honourable Winston Dookeran," said Persad-Bissessar.
She pointed out that last month, she curtailed her trip to the UN General Assembly because of the State of Emergency, however, she said her journey to Australia is an important one as it is her duty to hand over the stewardship of the Commonwealth.
The Prime Minister said although she will be afar, through technology, she'll be hands-on with respect to what is happening in Trinidad and Tobago.
"Thanks to the proliferation of information and communication technology and the access to information we now have at our fingertips, so my BlackBerry will be on BBM, text and roam," said Persad-Bissessar.

She also announced that the Office of the Prime Minister has a new upgraded website—www. opm.gov.tt.
She said the people of this country will be informed of all the latest news coming out from the Office of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is expected to return home in the first week of November.

'Crime-fighting helicopters new Govt taxi service'
By Stories by Joel Julien joel.julien@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Oct 18, 2011 at 10:50 PM ECT
Story Updated: Oct 18, 2011 at 10:50 PM ECT

HELICOPTERS originally meant to aid in local crime fighting have now become the new government taxi service, Opposition Member of Parliament Donna Cox has said.
Cox made the claim on Monday night moments before Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar arrived at the Divali Nagar site in Chaguanas by helicopter.
The Divali Nagar site officially opened on Sunday night in preparation for this year's Divali celebrations expected to be held on October 26.
Persad-Bissessar was the guest of honour on Monday night.

Cox chastised the Government's use of the helicopters during her contribution to the budget debate at the House of Representatives, Tower D, Waterfront Centre in Port of Spain.
The Public Sector Investment Programme for 2012 has stated that "the sum of $220 million is allocated for payments to be made on the contract for the construction of four Medium Twin-Turbine Helicopters".

"I observed that under the Ministry of National Security two helicopters were delivered to Trinidad and Tobago and commissioned in June 2011 while they are awaiting two more," Cox said.
"I want to raise something that is a concern to me and to the Ministry of National Security. I really hope that these helicopters will really be for the use of the Ministry of National Security and not for the Prime Minister to travel all over Trinidad and Tobago," Cox said.

"These helicopters are not for Cabinet transport, the members of the Defence Force are now calling the helicopters the new government taxi," Cox said.
Cox claimed that since the People's Partnership administration assumed office Persad-Bissessar has been seen travelling nationwide in helicopters.

The operational costs of the helicopters are too expensive to be utilised by the whim and fancy of the Cabinet, Cox said.
"The cost of operating these helicopters are very expensive, the cost to operate a helicopter is between $1,000 to $5,000 for one hour. $1000 - $5000 per hour just to operate the helicopter that is very expensive and it is observed that the Prime Minister lands here there and everywhere with the helicopters, Trincity, Arima, Diego Martin all over South (Trinidad)," Cox said.

Ent... Kams should get pull up on.
I could understand urgent matters requesting her presence immediately and going by car is time consuming. But really, to go Airport and Nagar :? thats just plain distasteful

Shame on you tanty Kams
