Apple more than doubled its profits last quarter thanks to brisk sales of its iPad and iPhones over the holiday season.Apple made a profit of $13.06 billion for the quarter ended Dec. 31, the first in its fiscal year. That compared to $6 billion in the same quarter a year earlier, Apple announced Tuesday.

Its earnings per share were $13.87, blowing past the analyst estimate of $10.10 per share, according to Thomson Reuters. Revenue was $46 billion, compared to the analyst estimate of $39 billion.



"We're thrilled with our outstanding results and record-breaking sales of iPhones, iPads and Macs," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. Apple was reporting results for its first full quarter under Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs in late August.

Apple sold 37.04 million iPhones in the quarter, up 128 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. And it sold 15.43 million iPads, up 111 percent from a year earlier. Mac sales totaled 5.2 million units, up 26 percent. Sales of its iPod continued to decline, however, by 21 percent to 15.4 million.

Apple has surpassed HP in both computer unit sales and revenues for the first time, taking the top spot sooner than expected on record sales of iPads. Rather than losing sales to low priced tablets, Apple said it would "continue to innovate like crazy" in the tablet arena.

Apple reported record quarterly sales of 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs, giving the company over 20 million sales of dedicated personal computing devices (distinct from its sales of more than 37 million phones). Gartner reported HP's worldwide sales for the fourth quarter to be 14.7 million, while Lenovo and Dell sold 12.9 and 11.6 million units, respectively.

Apple was expected to report sales closer to 13 million iPads, an estimate figure that was still well ahead of what Canalys had anticipated last fall when it predicted Apple would outpace HP before the second half of this year. Both Apple's revenues and profits were twice as high as Microsoft reported for the same holiday quarter.

Apple became the biggest buyer of semiconductors last year, ahead of Samsung Electronics and Hewlett-Packard, Gartner said on Tuesday.

Apple's increased semiconductor spending is the result of a number of factors. The company sold more smartphones, and its tablet business was also highly successful in 2011, according to Gartner. The success of the MacBook Air also increased Apple's semiconductor demand, it said.Apple spent a total of US$17.3 billion on semiconductors during 2011, compared to $12.8 billion during 2010, according to Gartner's estimates. In general, smartphones, tablets and solid-state drives were the major spending drivers in 2011, according to Gartner.

Samsung remained the second-largest semiconductor purchaser, thanks to its improving fortunes in the smartphone sector. The company's semiconductor spending grew by 9.2 percent to $16.7 billion.

At the end of the day, which is more productive?
There is a reason Hollywood and every major graphics and media house world wide use macs.

Obviously the total cost of ownership of a Mac is lower than buying a PC.

I think the PC you showed there has a lower resolution and smaller display, no multi-touch trackpad (iPhone-like controls) and is lacking the SOFTWARE the Mac ships with so you can use it right out the box.

I also don't know if the PC laptop has a backlit keyboard / ambient sensor, accelerometer / sudden motion sensor, unibody aluminium, glass screen?

Remember also, just like with cars, Apple doesn't sell cheap stuff. People who complain about Mac prices shouldn't be using a Mac. People who complain about certain car prices, should not be driving those cars.

And in the end, consumers spend their money on what they value.

I'm a PC user, but the build quality of Apple products is far and beyond any PC manufacturer.
hell even the packaging of any Apple product is incredible

^^ I don't know about that. In the old days what really separated Apple from PC's aprat from the operating system was the difference in the processor architecture. Apple was RISC (PowerPC IBM produced processors) while x86 (Intel, AMD,Cyrix,Via) was CISC. Neither of those architectures exist in a pure form in today's current desktop processors.

Apple now uses Intel processors in their boxes so in my book that does classify their machines as PC's.

I think what you mean is that Apple is not a Windows box and even that is not entirely true...you can install Windows on the current Apples...has been so for a while.

Personally...I still love putting together my own systems I don't think that would ever change. My first job when I was still in school was repairing Apple IIe's and at that time, they were totally different than PC's. Back then the tech that they had was way, way ahead of PC's.

An example of how apple was leading back in the day in terms of processing power..

When the G4 processor came out it was one of the first processors to feature special instructions just for multimedia type applications. Intel then followed with their MMX instructions followed by AMD 3D Now and many iterations of SIMD instruction sets followed.

At the end of the day, this argument is just about semantics because as it stands today the MAC uses the same architecture as the "PC". Argue all you want...but what really made a MAC a MAC was its RISC architecture. The only thing that differentiates them today is branding and the operating system (And yes one can argue styling and packaging).

IHMO the latter doesn't even matter..because you could install whatever OS you want on both.

At the end of the day they as both for personal use...making them personal computers..or PC's

The reason why this needed a thread on its own is because it big industry news. The iPad (and a few other top-end tablets) are considered 'computers'.

Apple's sale of Apple Macintosh iMacs, Mac Pros, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, Mac Mini's and iPads combined to make apple the largest PC — "Personal Computer" — maker in the world ! They have surpassed HP (now the second largest PC maker) and DELL.

If this isn't big news.... well...
