WTK: Hilux 3.0 or 2.5?

Postby John_Doe » January 7th, 2015, 5:06 pm

Posted this in the toyota forum but no help so gonna try here...
So I'm going to invest on one of the two, i would like to know what are the pros n cons between the 2... Been hearing that the 3.0 is troublesome. Is this true? I drove the 2 and i noticed a big difference. The Both offers I'm interested in are around the same age and mileage. I would also like to know what should i look for when checking them out again. (Both are around 110'000 and are 2010)

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

The logic I used with respect to car trims is always go for the biggest engine available, as more power is always a good thing.

There is a hilux thread somewhere in here with owners who may be able to assist you further. I know a friend with the 3.0 had a water pump failure with his but I'm not sure of any other problems with them.

Dont think there should be much of a difference.....why not take a trek to the toyota showroom and test drive both brand new....you would definitely notice if there really is a difference as they would bothe be new vans....

the 3 has an intercooler but the 2.5 doesnt........dont think there is much difference apart from that...

I think on some models the 3.0 had the hood scoop whereas the 2.5 didn't. I think the 09s didn't have this.

Some local companies were advertising a chip.
I'm not sure if they actually do anything though.

in terms of power delivery, the difference is really far apart. cost is the bigger factor. The 3.0 is much more fun to drive, but @ a higher cost, fuel consumption, and maintenance etc. The 2.5 is very economical but @ 115hp vs the 3.0 170hp avg. The difference is very noticeable. All in all a very smooth and comfortable truck (compared to navara anyhow) on the road.

2.5 runs great. Have both the 2.5 and 3.0.

@ highway speeds over 120 - 130 is where the real difference is between both.

In my opinion the 2.5 is actually a bit quicker in traffic driving etc ( speeds less 80 ) . Also the engine in the 2.5 is quieter and generally works better.

In conclusion, if speed is not your thing buy the 2.5. If you enjoy speed then go with the 3.0

We have a 2.5 hilux doing 500,000kms. Yes thats correct. Half a million. Did engine job at 400,000kms. When we opened her up it was normal wear. Van runs great. Its just a bit lazy but will last forever. I also do turbo repairs. There is not a single day that goes by that someone doesnt call about a 3.0 turbo issue. Their vn system is crappy and fails alot. My opinion, the new 2.5 is your best bet

I have a 3.0l about 2mts now and on work we got a new 2.5l. There is a big difference at lower speeds. The 2.5 is quicker than the 3.0l. But at above 80km the kick down is much better in the 3.0l. What causes this ? Is the turbo bigger in the 3.0l or does the intercooler create some boost lag. Also the two sounds very different when idling. You can hear the turbo singing much more in the 3.0l

I dont seem to experience any sort of kick down on the 2.5......Is this normal or is something wrong here?.....

KInda had some close calls as the van seemed to take longer than expected when overtaking as i really aint getting any kinda kickdown power whatsoever.........

Pickups are generally not meant for speed or much acceleration but power.

If you own a pickup you must learn the vehicle well before overtaking etc.

Finally moving from a car to a van is quite different. My opinion is pickups are not to be driven too fast and definitely not meant to be used cutting in and out of traffic. Take your time and reach safely.

Thinking in time to get a 3.0 4x4 but been reading and heard that the engine gets noisy after time on cold startups and some earlier 3.0 have some sort of diesel injector issues that caused some failures (dunno for the 2012 models on)

Didn't know the Vn turbos were giving issues but is there an aftermarket fix for this that can do away with the vn and run standard turbo without any ecu issues?

Need to inform the Americans about speed and pickup too. The new f 150 does zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds

I own a 3.0 and had a few issues including turbo. Being sorted by team loco presently . I will say 3.0 anyday anytime, the power climbing over maracas is simply WOW. My brother drove over once too n said it's like the van was doing it without breakin a sweat. The 2.5 is nice but the 3.0 to overtake or accelerate quickly is real impressive. Not sure how few persons saying it lazy. I also have the full carry boy kit n 20's and it really works nice. Was thinking its time to upgrade but.......to what now ? F250, dodge ram ......lol

3.0 works like a beyotch but giv trouble alot faster than the 2.5.... herd that the 3.0 is the same 2.5 engine rebore to the max .. if u lookin to keep in the long run..2.5 it is.. engine last longer turbo dont mash up fast etc .. this jus my contribution good luck in the decision process...

The 2.5 vgt sportero is the fastest of the local pickups according to an acceleration chart I saw on here.
I know the 3.2 pulls stronger than the hilux 3.0 from personal experience but the hilux has a better ride.
