SUNDAY started off as a great day for 26-year-old Keven Pierre.

Pierre, an avid cricket lover, was ecstatic when the West Indies team was able to secure its first series sweep in almost a decade.

The West Indies whitewashed the New Zealand team on Sunday and moved ahead of the Black Caps in the world test ranking.

"He told me to come and see (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul bat," Pierre's grandmother Mymoon told the Express at the family's Evelyn Trace, El Socorro Road home yesterday.

Chanderpaul was one of Pierre's favourite batsmen, second only to Brian Lara.

"He was happy when the team won, he always supported the West Indies and never turned his back on them even when they were not winning," Pierre's aunt Denise said yesterday.

After Pierre celebrated the West Indies' victory he went on a boat cruise in Carenage with some friends and family.

He had a good time and was happy, Denise said.

When Pierre reached back home Denise asked him to drop her to her family's home in Chaguanas.

Pierre's friend Ganesh Jagassar went along for the drive.

On his way back to his family's Evelyn Trace, El Socorro Road home tragedy struck.

Pierre was driving his cousin Shameel Ali's silver-coloured Mitsubishi Galant PBY 4977, heading north along the Uriah Butler Highway when, according to police reports, he received a "bad drive".

Pierre reportedly lost control of the car.

The car flipped several times and landed in the median separating the north-bound and south-bound lanes of the Uriah Butler Highway.

The accident occurred around 9.30 p.m. on Sunday in the vicinity of the Caroni flyover.

Pierre was dazed when he exited the vehicle.

While he was standing at the side of the highway Pierre was struck by a car that was heading in a northerly direction.

He died on the spot.

The car never stopped and police officers are now on the hunt for that driver.

Jagassar was seriously injured in the accident and is currently warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope.

Denise yesterday called on the driver that struck Pierre to surrender to officers.

Pierre's death comes just over a week away from the first anniversary of the death of his mother Debbie.

Debbie died August 14 last year.

Funeral arrangements for Pierre are still to be finalised.

Pierre's death was the second road fatality for the weekend.

Azim Mohammed was killed while crossing the east bound lanes of the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway near the O'meara intersection around 9.50 a.m. on Sunday.

The road fatality figure for the year now stands

The driver who hit and ran probably afraid that if he stopped the locals would come out and deal with him.
