Man stuffs $.37m into clothing, walks away in airport heist
Investigators:

By Mark Bassant CCN Senior Multimedia Investigative Journalist

More than $300,000 was allegedly stolen by a 23-year-old man from the Cambio Exchange booth inside the duty-free area of Piarco International Airport early Saturday morning.
Investigators say the daring heist, which took place in full view of surveillance cameras, happened shortly after 12.30 a.m. and the suspect stuffed all the money into his clothing and left the airport walking.
Senior law enforcement sources who spoke to TV6 exclusively, said a man with the initials ETR had been working at the Cambio Exchange booth for the last three months.
Early Saturday morning, investigators say, the suspect was on duty with another male employee, who left on a break.
When the employee returned to the Cambio booth about ten minutes later, he discovered all the local and foreign currency had vanished.
He reported the matter to authorities on the compound, who reviewed footage from surveillance cameras inside the Cambio booth.
That footage showed a man stuffing money into his clothing.
By that time, however, the suspect was long gone, having simply walked out of the airport, and has not been seen since.
A source close to the investigation told the Express investigators had no doubt the suspect kept the money in his clothing since the surveillance cameras showed him leaving the compound without any bags.
Investigators say it was quite possible some of the money was contained in small pouches that he had stashed on his person, and that is why he was able to walk out with such a large sum.
Moments later, a janitor found a bag containing Guyanese currency in a garbage bin inside the nearby men’s bathroom and alerted the authorities. In the black bag, police found 139,460 Guyanese dollars—about TT$4,000.
They believe the suspect might have placed the money there because he was unable to fit any more cash on his person.
Cambio officials were called and together with police.
The Express was able to obtain an official document showing the denominations of the local and foreign bank notes that were stolen:
• TT$159,742.83;
• US$20,285 (TT$131,041);
• euro3,440 (TT$26,926);
• Canadian $1,820 (TT$10,810);
• £2,255 (TT$20,956);
• Swiss Francs 3,090 (TT$19,559);
• Barbados $1,125 (TT$2,898);
• EC$440 (TT$928).
The total amount stolen has worked out to TT$372,860 after being calculated using the latest bank exchange selling rates. The Express understands that an all-points bulletin has been put out for a suspect, as Arouca police continue their investigations to determine if more than one person was in involved in the theft.

if I was him (which i'm not), I would have walked right back in with a disguise and hop on a flight out of here.

but then again....he probably have a lower chance of getting caught in trinidad than somewhere else.

no live camera monitoring....interesting.

i take it that the money is not marked in any way so the only way of tracking is to give all banks and foreign exchange places a picture of the man to look out for. lol

hmm i wonder if the guy did what Daren said,
that would have been so smart,
have your ticket booked, check in during your coffe/ cig break, take money and walk to your gate, must be a short flight though so the changes of them figuring out what happened and alerting the authorities at the destination airport is minimised, walk out of destination airport and disappear.
Then again can't do much with that sum of cash, so to be on the run forever for such a small sum is not very smart in the first place
lolz at dumping the Guyanese currency

THIS is a heist like a boss

31 detained over brazen $50M diamond heist at Belgian airport

BRUSSELS - Authorities claimed a major breakthrough on Wednesday in their investigation of a spectacular $50 million diamond heist, detaining at least 31 people in a three-nation sweep some three months after robbers pulled off the theft with clockwork precision at Brussels Airport

A Frenchman who is believed to have been one of the actual robbers at the airport was arrested in France, while six to eight people were detained in Geneva, and 24 in and around Brussels. Police did not indicate what the other suspects' roles might have been.

What's more, police say they have proof that diamonds found in Switzerland were part of the cache that was spirited away in the brazen Feb. 18 robbery that ranks among the biggest diamond heists of recent times.

Advertise | AdChoicesAfter two months of investigation on some of the suspects, police moved in. Suspects in France and Switzerland were detained on Tuesday, and the following day Belgian police carried out a massive operation, with 250 police involved in 40 house searches.

"In Switzerland, we have found diamonds that we can already say are coming from the heist, and in Belgium large amounts of money have been found. And the investigation is still ongoing," said Jean-Marc Meilleur, a spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor's office. He said police had also found luxury cars.

Meilleur was scant on detail, yielding no clues how police got on the trail of the suspects. Authorities were expected to announce later Wednesday how many of the detainees would be charged and arrested.

In Geneva, a police statement said that "a very important quantity of diamonds was seized" during the sweep "coming from the spectacular heist at Brussels airport." While Belgian authorities spoke of six detentions in Switzerland, Geneva police put it at eight, including a businessman and a lawyer. Authorities were alerted when suddenly a member of a major criminal organization appeared in their city. The value of the diamonds was still being estimated.

It was the first breakthrough in a robbery that many had started comparing to an "Ocean's Eleven"-type Hollywood script for its clinically clean execution during which no one was injured.

On a cold winter evening, the diamonds had been loaded on a plane bound for Zurich when robbers, dressed in dark police clothing and hoods, drove through a hole they had cut in the airport fence in two black cars with blue police lights flashing. They drove onto the tarmac, approached the plane, brandished machine guns, offloaded the diamonds, then made their getaway in an operation that barely took five minutes. Later that night, investigators found the charred remains of a van most likely used in the heist, but little else.

The stolen parcels contained both rough and polished stones. The trail ran dry until the surprise announcement on Wednesday.

Meilleur said that the man held in France is suspected to be one of the robbers. "This person has a very heavy judicial background in France and his extradition to Belgium has been requested."

Belgian authorities said that about 10 of the 24 people detained in Belgium were known criminals. The suspects ranged in age from 30 to 50, they said.

The diamond industry, too, was totally caught by surprise by Wednesday's developments. "But we can only be happy," said Caroline De Wolf, spokeswoman for the Antwerp World Diamond Center.
