THREE children watched helplessly as their mother Kesha Sanchez, 31, was chopped and shot by four men at their home at Second Taitt Trace in Guaico, Tamana. Sanchez’s 11-year-old son begged the men to stop, but his cries went unheeded as the men continued their savage attack on the unarmed woman. She would later die while undergoing emergency surgery at Sangre Grande District Hospital.
Police are working on a theory that Sanchez’s murder is linked to Sunday’s murder of former policeman Junior Khan.
At about 9.45 pm on Tuesday, Sanchez was with her two sons and daughter ages two to 11, at their home — the ground-floor apartment of a two-storey building — when she was called to the front door by someone knocking and claiming to be the police.
Sanchez opened the door and was immediately attacked by four men, one armed with a cutlass. She was first chopped on the neck after putting up a struggle with the cutlass- wielding man, during which the little finger on her right hand was severed.
As Sanchez continued to fight back, another of the assailants pulled out a gun and shot her twice in the back and once to the head. Neighbours heard Sanchez shouting, “Please...all you help me!” while her children were screaming and crying. The 11-year-old begged the four men to stop hurting his mother. “Mummy! Mummy!” the children cried as Sanchez lay on the floor bleeding profusely, according to reports given by neighbours who contacted the Sangre Grande police.
Officers led by Ag Sgt Harper and including Cpl Keith “Castro” Leon, Cpl Sean Jones, PCs Kheerai, Boodoosingh and members of the Eastern Division Task Force led by Cpl Nicholas Vialva, PC Mootoo and others, arrived within minutes of the distress call.
Officers found Sanchez on the floor near the front door of the apartment. She was still alive, but failed to respond to questions from the officers. She was placed in a police vehicle and taken to Sangre Grande District Hospital. Doctors made every effort to save her life, but Sanchez died during an emergency operation.
A neighbour reported hearing a vehicle pull up at the building, which has two ground floor apartments and two upstairs, at about 9.30 pm. The neighbour did not look out, thinking another resident had arrived home. However, the neighbour later heard a loud explosion and on looking out, saw four men run to a vehicle, get in and drive off.
By this time, other residents heard the screams and cries of Sanchez’s children and the arrival of the police as the wounded woman was taken to hospital. Two hours later, residents learned she had died.
Neighbours described Sanchez as a loving and peaceful woman who focused on her children.
Her relatives, who live close by, said little yesterday only calling for her killers to be arrested.
A young man from the village said he could not understand how four men could attack an unarmed woman with a gun and cutlass in the presence of her children.
“Shame on these men. You all have brought hopelessness to these young children who will now have to live without a mother,” the man said. Sanchez’s children are now in the care of relatives. An autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday confirmed Sanchez died from multiple gunshot wounds.
On Tuesday, at the apartment where Sanchez lived, police cordoned off the area and crime scene officers including acting Sgt Dedier, photographer WPC Portel Jones and PC Ramdass, searched for evidence.
Police said Sanchez’ murder may have been a revenge attack for the killing of Khan, alias ‘Wang Hue’, who was shot at Second Taitt Trace, not too far from where Sanchez lived, last Sunday. He died at Sangre Grande Hospital.
Investigators said Khan and Sanchez had a dispute and a matter which was before the court. It was also disclosed that Khan had filed reports with police that he had received death threats.
Yesterday, Khan who lived at Green Acres in Foster Road, Sangre Grande was laid to rest at the Foster Road Public Cemetery after a funeral service at the Valencia Pentecostal Church.
PC Kheerai of the Sangre Grande CID is continuing enquiries into the death of Sanchez, while investigators of the Arouca Homicide Bureau probe Khan’s murder.

15K in debt to a casino could cause that and could pay for 4 men going to her home and doing that? I not saying she was not looking for trouble, but that is still toots.
Plus I thought the only real crime down there was Gramazone self inficted or WO40oz

it make sense KILLING someone who owe you money?
I does see them moneylender breaking people hand and food, no use killing someone who owe yuh.
