I saw this is the Guardian last month...

guess another case where "your Government working for you"

http://www.guardian.co.tt/business/2015 ... refund-yet
Published: Saturday, February 7, 2015

One expected that by this time income tax payers who filed their returns prior to the April 30, 2014 deadline, would have received their tax refunds for 2013. Instead, some of us have gotten notices of having been audited for 2008 though no tax is owed! To date, not one of the two dozen or so people I assist with filing their returns has received his/her refund—an untenable situation, if you ask me.

This letter is a plea to the Board of Inland Revenue and whoever else is responsible for this injustice to pay 2013 tax refunds without further delay.

This is ridiculous, government can pay the unproductive PSA workers increased salaries who take more than 1 year to process a tax refund for the same tax payers that pay their salaries.

Why don't you guys file a TD1 at the start of the year with all of your projected deductions for the year? If u have $30k in deductions then your personal allowance would be increased from $60k to $90k. You then get your payroll department to adjust your monthly taxes to only pay taxes on your income above $90k and therefore have no need to claim for a refund at the end of the year.

Of course you need to provide them with evidence to support the deductions. For annuities/TISP plans etc, they accept the statement that you get at the start of the year showing your projected payments. Not sure what they would require for alimony/child support payments etc. Maybe the court order. But feel free to email them, they take a while to respond but eventually they will answer.

Question: If you filed your taxes and realized you owe the government money, do you pay it from inception when you drop off your form? or you drop off your forms and wait for them to confirm the figure on the spot or they usually send you a correspondence later on when they confirm the figure?

they will send you a notice to let you know how much & by when you have to pay. no sense rushin to pay, your second figure may be wrong as well & you could owe more or less depending

but if you wish you can go & pay before you get the notice, just make sure the payment & receipt show it relates to the relevant period of the return in question

Hi, can tax refunds be retroactive? I purchased a home back in November 2011 and only now discovered that I am eligible for a tax refund on this ($18000 per year for 5 years).

Thanks for any info

Depends.
Once you filed your returns in 2011/2012/2013 already & didn't claim, you cannot re-file for the same years & claim again looking for a retroactive refund.
If you haven't filed for those years yet, then you can do so now & would be eligible to claim for the mortgage interest paid in the years in question.

Hi

How long is the cheque you receive valid for. If it has expired what is the procedure to still get the returns. Reason why I ask is that i am out of the country

Also the 18k is a deduction so you only would get back 25% of that. I'm still waiting over a year for my lawyers to finalize my purchase so I can start to get that deduction..
