you're not supposed to drive on paved roads in 4wd even if it's raining

That's what happens when you engage 4x4 on a hard, high-traction surface like tarmac... even in the rain.
The drive-components of the transmission, differentials and axles undergo tremendous stress when there is high-traction, esp. when turning corners (4x4's don't like to turn corners when 4wd is engaged)... and you WILL break something.
