which van/truck would best fit the following:

good distance per tank fuel (>600km between fills)
fuel efficient, <$100 to full 3/4 tank to give ^ distance
<$80k
5-10yrs old
best back seat room
4x4 if possible
carryboy easily available and cheap

i think the k74 l200 is the closest, D22 frontier close and ranger ok.
what do you guys think???

the Rangers and BT50 or B2500 with the WLT 2.5 Direct injection engines (not the TDCI ones) generally don't give you more than 500km per tank.

The two best options for you for a van that's <5yrs is either:

1. 2.5L turbo diesel 2KD-FTV Hilux
2. 2.5L 4D56 direct injection sportero (from 2007 up).

Both have very fuel-efficient engines, and can regularly give you 600-700km per tank once you drive conservatively.
ALthough they're both the less-powerful engines of their kind, they still have enough pulling power to haul cargo regularly and reliably. Just don't expect to be stomping on little Almera's and B15's at the traffic lights, that's not what those particular rucks were designed for.

good advice LH, looking for 5 to 10 yrs though.
have a couple kids too.
back seat room space is important and safety too.
i think the best options are the new l200 and hilux (small engines as recommended above)
have a while to make my decision so will try to test each first.
i know i need to raise the budget so considering that too.
dad owns k34 l200 and once had a d22 frontier and he recommends 'any hilux'
anybody can give a short review of the '00-'06 l200? legroom, mileage, problems etc.

Can't go wrong with an old school lux ....New lux not as trouble free or reliable.

Been driving them for twelve years, and never had a problem.
