livinloud12 Thanks for giving us the official Petrotrin escort. Much appreciated.

Next time we on that side again we could link up and help you put some mud on that brand new Petrotrin FRONTIER...

hey guys i went to the St Joseph to Caura trail and i could not have made it through because the path had collapse.

these are the pics i took i also got stuck on a river crossing but being that it was my van alone, my mind was more on recovery than on actually recording so i did not take any pics of the van being stuck

Jerrol shoot up some pics of what you did today.

On Sunday we headed out for a scout of Heights Of Aripo. Wanted to see how far up we could get and whether or not the trail was passable.

Beautiful rich greenery, forest scented air, and plenty rain made the uphill trails slippery and muddy allowing us to enjoy the use of HI and LO ranges.

We reached the end of the trail and there was a walk down to the Caves of Aripo. However we chose not to do the trek. The vans could go no further so we turned around at the bottom of the slope and headed homeward...

The scout turned out to be much more enjoyable than we had anticipated mainly due to the heavy rains.

Some pictures from the trail -

Yes indeed! Las Cuevas was very tough!!

On SAT 28th Aug'10 4TH CLASS EXPLORERS made a run from Arima-Blanchiseuse Road heading down to Las Cuevas. This was the 1st time we hit Las Cuevas so late arriving at around 4:30 - 5:00PM, which is usually the time that we are heading out.

The water in the trail was quite high -with the water level half way up the van doors in some places. We ended up bursting 4 straps in attempting multiple recoveries. Tow straps with 10,000 lb capacity, nylon rope, even a marine rope rated at 5 tonnes (or was it 4 tonnes) were all snapped in attempted recoveries.
(I think I suffered the only casualties with a shattered back windscreen and a broken tail-light :( )

Darkness fell quick and we had to call in the big guns for help. John came to our rescue in his well-prepped Toyota Hilux.

Big John pulled into the trail at night in 2WD, pulled us out and had us on the road in 15mins or less. He expressed his dissapointment in getting us out so quickly. He said he expected to have a little fighting up in the mud.
Big John asked if we would like to go back into the trail so that he could have a little more recovery action. We politely declined his generous offer...

Thanks very much John for your kind assistance in helping us out.
(Sorry you didn't even get to use your 4WD... :) )

Looked like crazy fun in all that mud!

Do you think a snatch recovery line would have provided more assistance here, considering the type of recovery you guys were using?

Yep I think that's the way to go -maybe with a 30,000 lb / 40,000 capacity.
We are definitely upgrading ALL our straps for the next run!

Sorry to say, but I personally was disappointed and frustrated to the verge of using obscenities in the bursting of the straps.

I had also burst mine extracting a Suzuki Vitara the weekend before...and he wasn't even sunk as deep as we were...

We will definitely be upgrading our recovery gear!

i think we need to upgrade to cable - those straps i bought was rated at 2 tonnes - i know that strain we put on it way exceeded the specs thats how they all burst.
Maybe we should put together some funds and put up to buy a good winch (in a bag) - chains would be a better option than the straps.
But seriously guys, after all that action up there in the bush - i am willing to take a rest for a while...LOL
