the birth and baptism of drifting in T&T

Postby Tsuchiya » September 21st, 2007, 3:30 pm

Drifting - the art of trying to walk in a straight line after a few; actually alot more than that; alcoholic beverages. This has been the Trini definition of the term long before since Caroni 1975 Ltd. was even dreamt of. However gaining popluarity by the turn of the millenium was this same "drifting" term, which however meant the act of directing a vehicle such as an automobile ( can't say 'car' due to the insane videos of drifting semis, golf-carts and mostly everything with more than 1 wheel), while it slid to the point and many times over the threshold of control.
I won't go into detail to how it started as everybody has seen or known about some sort of drifting before it became popular and the origin hence, is somewhat cloudy.

Gaining cult status in the US with assistance of the initial D anime, drifting became an everyday, household term with every turn being a potential clipping point; every shallow ditch a tyre-drop maneuver. And so it slowly trickled into Trinidad life, drag racing still remained our staple product. Even after the one and only raceway was shutdown, drags never died.
There were few however, where drag racing was never the game for them. Circuit gave a little more enthusiasm but there was still a void.
The new sport of drifting promised to fill that void.
"BUT where would we go? Who shall teach us the technique?" the masses asked; and so was born the Drift World Order.
Started by a group of three (3) slide maniacs who took it upon themselves to establish an area for this sport, it soon went from 'gereral wildness' to "sunday drift @ ARC" and onto the DWO drift events.
DWO wasn't and still isn't without "nay-sayers" or negative ones, as many have stepped up to the plate to voice their opinions expecting D1 level the 1st and 2nd time out; although one can only grow better with feedback and experience and develop from there. As the sport continues to grow, I hope the level of participation grows as well, as this sport is all about the driver, his/her car, and having a heck of a good time from the thrills of full opposite lock and creating the Dunlop, Toyo, or Michelin "fog".
DWO is not just a club or group, it's a lifestyle..a thrill...an expression of joy and happiness.

DWO - it's life at a different angle
