Good Morn,

I spoke to a guy that rebuilds transmissions and he indicated that if i wanted to build a SR20 automatic transmission for about 500 horses and able to take NOS - it would cost approx 8-12k.

Just feeling around for information - who does this kinda thing down here ?

I would like to get some contact info / details on this prospective task

if he is using level 10 parts then that cost is good

find out what components he would be using

if it really takes 500 or more whp for that price then it seems to be fair....

Know someone that had this done by a mech in la romaine, don't know who exactly, was able to handle 3oowhp on a ka24, still find it's too expensive and at the end of the day it's still an automatic.

V2NR 3.0, bro don't spend the money to build a tranny for a gazillion horsepower if you are not going to make it.

For my needs, a stock sr20 engine making 125whp and then a 75hp shot of nos(NOS brand measures the power their jets make at the wheel) meant that i was therotically making 200whp which a stock SR tranny with an external cooler could handle.

I needed a rebuild so I rebuilt using a stock off the shelf SR rebuild kit but also utilised a reprogram kit to correct some inherent SR tranny problems as well as adding some integrity to the box.

As little as below 3k shifting in D I used to peel tyres, not good for my tyre life but I didn't care cause this is how I set up the car to work. The other issues is when you have a tranny shifting so vigourously, you always burst mounts so I needed to reinforce them which added vibration to an everyday driver which again didn't make a difference to me cause it was a purpose built vehicle I made.

At the end of the day, you need to decide what you want to do with the vehicle and do your build based on that and not a boast build.

My personal take on it, so don't be getting your panties all in a bunch.
I know a lot of people might not agree with me, but if i'm going to spend that type of money on a build, a gear box is a lot more cheaper, more fun to drive (imho), and that extra money can be spent on other parts of the car. Getting a tranny that can take 500hp is nice but realistically that is a hard number to aim for in an sr20, and then you have to take reliability issues concerning the amount of mods involved.
And honestly drove a 200sx with a modified tranny and for me it seemed only suited for a straight line, pushing it around corners you start to miss the ability to control your gears precisely as i would like.

You seem to have me confused with someone else, I don't wear panties.

Picture this, a identical cars set up the same and the only essential difference was the transmission, one being a lsd gb with a s&s clutch and the other lsd auto with some minor tranny work.

On the qtr mile, the auto always ran quicker times because where the guy with the gb had to lift to shift, and auto guy didn't so he was always on tap for power and in this case was nos. Btw, this is an actual local scenario.

Also when I fied clutches, a clutch for the tranny was $200 and for the power being outputted was cheaper than a s&s clutch.

My tranny costed $3k to build.

At the end of the day, anyone whoever decides on a build for their vehicle would master the art of what they have, don't knock it if you never did it.

Yes, but the op mentioned using level 10 parts, a huge difference in price compared to your build.

The biggest selling point is the purpose of the build and will the op be going to that extreme of an engine build to properly utilise the tranny and to support the money spent on the tranny. No sense spending around 15k to build a tranny capable of handling 500hp with nos and have only 250hp.

Anyway i'm not trying to get in a pissing contest with anyone on 2nr, it appears that your real life knowledge, abilities or accomplishments mean nothing on tuner unless you have over 1000 tech posts and joined several years ago.
As a result i'm now going to bump old topics in the tech forum and say x2 in the recent ones to properly qualify.

rollingstock, DAVE is very versed and has proven it time and time again regarding work done on his B14 (former). There are hundred of on-line mechanics who aint have a clue about what, why and where they doing...However Dave has proven - i think his car ran early 12's on a tranny (subject to correction).

Dave, Bro - exactly what you had with your b-14 is what i wanna do. Guidence is appreciated. BTW, the car is NOW an everyday driver that my mom and sis use, since i have the other vehicle... but when i wanna have some fun i wanna be able to. Can you link me with the guy who did you tranny work ? - Remember im sr20vvl black top fwd with a sr20 tranny cable type. I also have like 2 spare trannies put down and also 2 gear boxes just in case....but im loving the tranny comfort.

V2NR 3.0, wasn't commenting on Dave accomplishments, but my own, very few persons on 2nr know who i really am and what i have done, and i know all too well of what dave has done. No disrespect, just from the way he wrote it seemed dismissive and he focused on a statement i made in joke hence reason for the emoticon, even though we basically had the same frame of mind.

My point was that a rebuilt tranny of this type is more suited for the strip, seeing as we have no strip i believe that a modded gb would have been more suitable to have a little fun, which is my and i believe every tuner's reason for spending absurd amount of money on their cars, if it's no fun what's the reason.
Dave's rebuilt stock tranny seems the better choice seeing as it's your daily driver and other drivers use it, at 3k it's a good price and should be reliable with the present engine setup. A level 10 parts build is overkill in my opinion.

P.S i owned a b11 with an e15t and rebuilt tranny (capable of taking up to 200hp, modified converter and aftermarket clutches, sadly the guy that did it has since passed away in a tragic accident), was fun to drive, with the lsd you could rev the engine to 3500rpm and drop it in d and is tires all over the place  [/b]

I am presently putting in a lsd transmission im my little prject mated to a sr20 vvl, I had to give up on putting in a gearbox because I had clearance issues with the shifter and the stearing rack, I was told that the lsd transmission hold up as well as the gearbox, any feed back on this, I would like some info as to how to modify the transmission, by the way the complete non lsd gearbox and everthing for a full conversion is for sale, axles, clutch pedal shifter, pm me if any of you are interested
