10W40 or 15W40 once you are not consuming oil.
20W50 only if the consumption is high.

I ran 20w50 for two weeks moderater driving but the car was operating sluggish .I used 10w30 and the car is moving like a beast .I was told to use the 10w 30 by a friend who has a legacy GT.He stated that the 20w 50 was too thick and this can cause bearing damage ( Spin a bearing).

According to this document, 10W30 is also fine.

You are a bit mixed up... In our climate using thinner oils like 5w30, 10w30 etc can cause you to spin bearings... 20w50 is thicker yes and it provides more lubrication than thinner oils. At the end of the day it's your choice though...

No modern car (post 1990) in the US uses 20W50 oil.
And the US gets to both hotter and colder temperatures than Trinidad.
So, stick to the owner's manual or service manual.

Some good info on how to spin a bearing

Big Z,

1) Don't E92 BMW M3's use 10W60 wt oil - factory fill? That's THICKER than a 20W50. And that car is "in the US". I could be wrong...but I'm pretty sure they don't use *W30 oils in the M3, and that car is sold "in the US" (notice you did not say a US BRANDED car).

Guess the E92 M3 must be ancient then.

2) Take a read of this:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... schaeffers

3) MOST USDM subaru owners move up to a 5W40 or 10W40 after their 30k MILE service. Rotella 5W40 is actually the oil of choice for most owners in the southern states running anything over stock hp, and some degree of mileage on them.

4) Also keep in mind that the owner's manual for these cars says that thicker oil visco should be used for severe service. If the car is MODIFIED, considering it's MILEAGE, then I would hardpressed to recommend a 30W oil.

5)In fact, I'm willing to bet using a 10W30 leads to a pretty amt of burnoff if that car is driven with any amount of vigour (the EJ205 is notorious for blowby at higher mileage).

I was actually quite surprised when I checked the Subaru service manual and saw 10W30 being suggested in the EJ20T. Hence my original recommendation of 10W40. The local copies of the service manual I have don't have 10W30 for the EJ20T.

I forgot about the BMWs... don't have much of those over here. They are pretty much the exception to the rule. Never understood why they use such a thick oil too. Don't skip an oil change though... Major sludge if you do.

See my first post with my initial recommendation.

this is a matter of much debate.... my personal preference is 40 body..... but it really depends on driving habit and engine characteristics....
