Just did 15K km with RP 15w40 in an NZE, one filter change @ 7.5k and no top up. recovered about 90% (a lil over 3.5 quarts)of the initial oil.

Toyota's engines are known for sludge build up. I am still a firm believer in fresh oil @ 5K intervals, therefore for me normal GTX @ $146/gallon---Dollar Savers.

Switched to Valvoline 10w 30, full synthetic, $250/gallon, Penny Savers in Aranguez

Also did a MotorVac engine flush, engine seems to be running smoother.

Shell Helix 20W 50...Really good oil...i had worked on a job at the Shell's blending facility in Pt. Lisas an i have seen for myself the test they carry out while the oils are beeing blended for the general market...all oils are imported an are blended in trinidad, so it's gud stuff. if the oils do not meet specified requirements they immediately cancel that batch and use it to make a different grade of oil........most of us think Shell local an their oils are no good....thats a lie they are dam good lubricants

Kiran, no one here ever said that the locally produced Shell oils are bad...
Actually, I would struggle to find a single bad review of them diesel or gas...

That said, I havent really bought since they switched the product names simply because I have other brands stocked up.

Yep, I used to be a staunch user of the old Shell Helix Plus (blue bottle) semi-synth for YEARS and YEARS.

Then, it seems they had problems with local production and started importing, meaning that the price jumped about 35%, at which point I abandoned and switched..

Now that it is HX6 (i believe) I haven't gone back to it simply because I am getting synthetic cheaper than the Shell semi-synth..

So I see NP's "Ultratec" (think it was a 10W40) is claimed to be a synth oil, exceeding API SM, and "made in the USA".

Anyone know where they're getting their basestock from?

Refer to your car's user manual. It will outline the oil grade to use. For each oil grade there will be some price variation from brand to brand. Also, there is no "best" oil as long as you get it from a reputed manufacturer.

^^Hey, it's a good oil....no research or stats involved.

I just find it's overpriced....that's my gripe.

I'd be hard pressed to pay $90 a qt for oil.....jus' saying.

On another note, anyone know who the distributor is for Valvoline oils?

^^Schaeffer's has alwyas been a bit more expensive than the other "non-boutique" oils.. And yes, it's pricey for a blend.

But in certain cases for turbocharged cars running high boost etc, some people report that it resists oil burn off (blowby, whatever) better than some other full synthetics out there.

Again, it depends on the application.
