Havoc
if the oil is rated @ 20 000 miles........ i dont see a problem with the equivalent kilometer reading.
Most oils can usually exceed the rating ,however it is good practice to service on time

as for your oil test..........i know a place that used to do it. I will find out if they still do

i havent used synthetic on neither of our pickups tho..........

You can use any oil that you want, its purely a matter of how much you want to spend and what oil change interval you intend to run

This is an old-school rule that applied to diesels of yesteryear, mostly direct injection diesels with high-mileages on them. THe principle was that all those miles would cause certain wear patterns within the heads, and that mineral oils make better biofilms over these score-marks than synthetic oils. The synthetic oils were thought to be too thin and slide too easily off the walls of the chambers. The mineral's biofilm thus seals in all the microscopic cracks & scores, thus preserving the integrity of the head, block and cylinders.

I think this is a myth, cuz viscosity is judged by the oil's weight, not the type of oil it is.
a 50W mineral and a 50W synthetic should be almost exactly the same in viscosity.
Modern synthetics do tend to have a lot more detergents that help keep the internals a lot cleaner than mineral oils, which does affect performance over the long run.

Like CD4Accord said - it doesn't really matter what brand you're using, what really matters is how long you'll be running the oil and how often you plan to change the oil & filters.

Generally for diesels, the basic change interval for oil & filters is 5000km, whether is mineral or synthetic (or semi-synthetic). With newer synthetic oils like Mobil1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, SHell Rimula R6, Total 4x4/SUV, you can run up to 7500 - 10,000km no problem - but your filter should match that oil's performance (most stock filters shoudl change by 7500km).

Another rule of thumb, the older your diesel engine with more miles, the thicker body you should use. For our climate ad ambient temperatures, a 50W body is ideal for most diesels of most mileages. You can get away with a thinner body like a 10W40 or 15W40 on newer vehicles, but when you reach over 100,000km, you can safely switch to a 50W.

the castrol crb turbo and hypuron are really great oils, they withstand some of the toughest conditions, and still goes beyond the 5K mark....

but since tracmac prices have increased, im guessing they will not be as popular again....

from what i kno not all the total is blended by np, some are imported and they too work great, another good oil is the total 4X4/ SUV for a man on abudget, or who racks up mileage fast, if your pocket can go the depth, go all the way with a fully syn oil.....

but again trinibajan, as i said abt the coolant, find out what the man was using, once he did not have any issues with it and u can afford and access it, use the same thing....

reason being, a particular oil would have created wear patterns and would have filled voids in the system, u go and put in some fancy oil there now, that cleans out all the barriers built, and u could have some issues.....

why i say this???

i bought my van some 50K ago, and when i got it the guy was using turbomax, so i continued, they now re-badge it crb turbo, and now she still runs as good, starts in half tumble, and on the mark, oil change to oil change.........

Amsoil is about $240 per gallon of 15W40
Total 4x4/SUV 15w50 semisynthetic - $170 per gallon
Shell Rimula R4 semisynth - $160 per gallon
Shell Rimula R6 synthetic - $230 per gallon

Lighthammer, is Rimula R4 semisynthetic? I really don't think it is.. I am fairly sure it is a purely mineral oil (allbeit a very very competent one)
http://www.shell.com/home/content/produ ... rimula_r4/

I have no problem with R4 as my 4D56T ran the old Rimula Super for YEARS without a single worry...
I have only good things to say about it...

That said, I have been running Total Rubia TIR 7400 for the last oil change.. I think i paid about $130 for a 4 L bottle..

I was a former Hypuron user but since the price increase I really couldn't justify it.. They just are charging synthetic money for a semi-syn

drive along munroe rd from the highway in an easterly direction, as if you are heading to the SMR, landmarks to be passed, matrix paint shop, dinesh muffler shop, kaljam ali auto, matches bar, lomart school of accounting, flashing amber lights, not too far after that u will see midway poultry depot and the tune up shop, right there,

its on the left side of the road, as of all these landmarks.....

the black bottle castrol, CRB turbo is $179 there, $190-$195 other parts place

while ur there u can pick up some amsoil DC and cetane boost, good price too...

I know the place I was quite surprised to much cheaper that the Mobil . They also sells the quarts so you can buy that instead of the gallon for a cheaper change cost!

Lol sorry guys, my bad. Amsoil isn't $240 per gall, that's the price from 2 yrs ago I believe its retailing for abouit $280 per gallong now, I can't remember offhand.

But there are lots of places carrying amsoil now, so it shouldn't be hard to find!
