Been getting a problem, when cold it takes a few seconds for 'D' drive to engage, 'R' reverse works fine. However when engine & stuff becomes hot, no problems whatsoever.

Went to Singh's in Barrackpore today, spoke to the dude & he said its the seals in it that needs to be replaced, (he did not take the car for a drive or anything).

I was advised that I have 2 choices:

I - rebuild i.e. replace the seals etc, 2 days (or so he say) & the cost to replace these seals inclusive of the price of the seals is $3000.00

II - replace, buy a whole foreign used one & slap it in. Now there is the uncertainty of the condition of this foreign used one & how long it will hold up for (usually 1 - 2 weeks warranty on it).
Price of foreign used transmission = approx $2500.00
Labor to install = approx $500.00
plus Transmission oil & stuff
Total of >$3000.00

Sooo....whats the best option?

I find that rebuild price kind of fishy though, how come changing of parts & labor to do so coming up almost the same as a next one?

I seeing a lot of threads in here (yes I did a search) but all are inconclusive, usually the same set of people saying 'rebuild, cal x,y, or z' & some saying replace. What exactly is the best thing to do & while we at it can you guys call out a few more transmission repair guys contact numbers. I know there is one dude in tableland & another in la romaine. Any other competent repairmen, feel free to post the numbers as well.
Thanks.

i did a rebuild last year on a b13 transmission and it went bad again by that same man named sings in bpore but charged me 2000$ for the labour and parts etc...... not sure if the guy did it well or that was the normal thing, ended up buying a FR used one and its working well ever since...however...in a almera that i own, that same thing was happening with the drive gear and it turned out that i had to change the transmission fluid, never got any problems after!

^^

I saw your post / threads.

I usually change my fluids on time, T-fluid changed like 3 months ago anyways.

Did you ever price out any almera transmissions btw?

nerve I having the same problem with my reverse gear. At first it would only take about a second longer to engage than the other gears. Told my mechanic in Debe about it & he said it would only get worse, and that it would be better to rebuild. It has indeed gotten much worse now! He's charging $2200 to rebuild, inclusive of new parts and labour. I'll pm the number and other details if you want.
I agree with you about being uncertain of the foreign used condition. I priced the B13, B14 and B15/Almera transmission (QG15) about 2 weeks ago at Bick's in Penal, all 3 are $2500. My sis bought an Almera/ QG16 tranny in the bamboo last December & paid $2500 as well.

I've also been hearing good stuff about Keith Charles in La Romaine, but I haven't spoken to him personally yet to find out how much he charges.

BTW what was the conditon of the old tranny fluid when you changed it? Were there any metal shavings in it? And did you notice any change in performance of the transmission after? I was thinking about doing this in the short term until I can get it rebuilt.

Hmm...ok. That still more expensive than a rebuild for me though.

I asked the more experienced tuners in this thread and they said it was a good price...

Why? It's a fuel economy gear. Why only use it above 80km/h?

Actually from what I read nuttin wrong with leaving it on at lower speeds. I just find at lower speeds like around my home town & stuff the car has a slightly faster acceleration, kinda a 'light' feeling to it & 'feels' like there is a bit more ease in climbing hills (could be in ones mind).
Its not set in stone that I throw on the switch above 80, sometimes less. RPM tends to be a tad bit higher with it off so for a long run at a high speed like 80km/h & that vicinity so I simply put it on to have less rev's (I just hate to hear an engine revving). Just personal preference actually.

Can this work for reverse gear as well?

G, 647-6739, ask for david, thats the guy from next door by me on the hill.

He would recommend a rebuild for long term and would stand by his work against defect.

most rebuilders with any reputation will give u 6 months
a FU tranny u get 30days u do the math
personally i always lean towards the rebuild
