I need to have this Media Blasted

Image

Does anyone know of place that does media blasting at a reasonable cost (i.e. not Chagaramas).
Need this done this week.

Try PanLand, on E.M.R. in Laventille (opp. Angostura Distillery.) Ask for Mr. Cooper.

BTW they can powdercoat it for you as well. (REMOVE the coil-overs first.)
I just did my Steam Cleaner and Refrigerated Air-Dryer there... Good quality workmanship IMHO.

I know the shocks have to come off, but the bolts are seized in the bushings.

Machinist's Workshop:- April/May 2007 wrote:
Penetrating oil .... Average load
None ................ 516 pounds
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds
PB Blaster .......... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil .......... 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."
The lower the number of pounds the better.
Try the last one, it should help.

Not to worry
I will cut the bolts and remove the shocks
They are after all about 20 years oldand we fitting new ones.
I was at Panland yesterday, but the staff went home because of no electricity earlier in the day.
I will take it back there for the quote when next I have use of the pickup.

Yup. Careful how you handle acetone though.

my concern with that frame would be the structural integrity
you sure you trust those welds after so many years?
what you have there is a nice template to rebuild a strong frame from scratch

^ ^ ^ No idea, Conrad. I never had the need (yet.)
In any case, I would use the ATF-Acetone mix... More efficient.

Wiki:- "Acetone is often the primary component in cleaning agents such as nail polish remover."

Just take basic precautions (gloves) and store the mixture in a well-ventillated area... along with your stash of NOS... Gasolene... etc. etc.

Which is why we are media blasting the frame so that we can inspect it.

u plan to x-ray it?
you should know you cannot determine the integrity of a weld just by visual inspection...........not to mention metal from that era tends to get brittle over time.........

X-ray testing may be very expensive and might not be necessary, MG.
Liquid Penetrant Testing is much cheaper, easier to do and easy to clean up after...

I meant no disrepect to either Sanctifier or MG Man.
I simply implied that we should not go overboard on the inspection.

I appreciate both Sanctifier and MG Man's offerings and respect their opinions.

No explanations necessary. I know there was no disrespect implied... and no offence was taken.

Back on track... nice project. What engine/transaxle have you decided to use?

While the car was originally designed and built around the British Leyland A series Mini engine and gearbox, we have decided to switch to motorcycle power. The bike conversion is quite common in the UK. Not only does the bike engine make more horses, but it is lighter, fuel injected and comes with a 7 speed sequential gearbox.

Got the chassis back from Panland on Wednesday.

Some minor repairs are needed, but it is in great shape for a 38 year old frame.

Yup...

Hi Rory.
Did a check on that info on the D.I.Y. Penetrating Oil... The Author edited the info... It's "Power Steering Fluid" not "ATF" that was used.

Machinist's Workshop V20 number 2, April/May 2007, page 35
Article: Testing Penetrating oils.

The table below extracts the results table. The lower the number of pounds the better.
Interesting that a simple mix of acetone and power steering fluid (PSF) works the best!

Penetrating Oil... Average load... Price ($US) per fluid ounce
None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ................... 238 pounds......... $0.25
PB Blaster .............. 214 pounds......... $0.35
Liquid Wrench ........ 127 pounds......... $0.21
Kano Kroil............... 106 pounds......... $0.75

PSF-Acetone mix........53 pounds......... $0.10 (50/50 mix)

Note from original article author:
1) These are loads required to free the test piece after 8 hours of immersion in penetrating oil.
This is probably not representative of a quick squirt just before a wrench is applied.

2) The original article states ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)was used in the DIY mix.
It was actually PSF. (Power Steering Fluid.) I corrected the table to reflect this.
