A couple who were robbed by two armed men in El Dorado, Tunapuna, while seated inside their car late Tuesday night turned the tables on one of the robbers and severely beat the man after they chased and captured him.
The 22-year-old man was knocked down by the couple's vehicle and tossed into a nearby drain along Clementy Street, El Dorado, as he attempted to flee the scene.
He was held by the two victims but managed to put up a struggle, following which an alarm was raised and residents quickly came out of their homes and assisted in restraining the suspect.
The man was beaten about the body by some of the residents who warned him never to come back into their community to commit a crime.
As the man lay in the drain, another resident tie-strapped his hands. Shortly afterward, detectives Antoine and Periera, of the Tunapuna CID, and officers of the Northern Division Task Force Area West arrived on the scene.
The suspect was removed from the drain and searched by Antoine, who found a .22 pistol tucked in his waist. The victims also identified the suspect as one of two men who had robbed them of two gold bracelets valued $2,800.
Sgt Mark Maharaj took the suspect into custody and for medical treatment at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, where he remained warded under police guard.
Police said he sustained multiple injuries about the body and his arm was dislocated during his attempt to escape capture.
Head of the Northern Division Snr Supt David Abraham, who also coordinated the arrest of the suspect and a search for another man known to the police, promised increased patrols in the area.
"Minutes before the robbery took place, a patrol passed in the area then the robbery happened. We are certainly going to increase patrols in this area to ensure residents are free to go about their business without being pounced upon by bandits.
"We, the police, want to thank the residents for assisting in apprehending the suspect, but in the same breath warn them to exercise extreme caution since these criminals will do anything in an attempt to escape," Abraham told the Express via telephone.
The couple reported to police that around 9.40 p.m. they were seated inside their vehicle along Back Street Extension, El Dorado, when two men approached the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle and announced a hold-up.
One of them was armed with a gun, while the other had a knife. The woman was relieved of two gold bracelets and, as the men attempted to escape, one of them was challenged by the male victim.
He was later chased by the victim in his vehicle along Sergeant Street and, in an attempt to run to the Priority Bus Route, the suspect was knocked down by the vehicle and thrown into a drain along Clementy Street.
The suspect faces charges of common assault, possession of a firearm, assault with intent to rob and robbery with aggravation. Detective Antoine is probing the incident.
