17 or 18's

Postby diamonds are forever » April 26th, 2012, 8:57 pm

Hey guys just need some input from you all on some rims. I currently have a set of 17" R-1 racing rims black and chrome on my galant, i want to change to some chromes but should i stay with the 17's or go to 18's? If anybody ever switched please share some of your advice, what are the pro's and cons of doing this. The engine the car currently has is a 2.0 litre.

What series/ profile tyres you running?
As your rime size goes up the profile must come down to maintain the same overall circumference other wise your speedometer/ odometer calibration / reading will not be accurate and this may also effect your tranny shift pionts .
Also if you do not adjust your profile to maintain the original circumference your car will look very high as though you are going off road.

A lower profile tyre however can result in damage to both rim and tyre easier if you hit a hole as compared to a higher profile tyre. A lower profile can result in a harsher ride and road feel on the steering but this is a personal preference.

My cy lancer came with 205 / 60 / 16 .

Another model cy came with 215/45/18 ... the 45 was told low for me as explained above so I went with a set of 225 /50/ 17, whiched looked way better than the stock 16's.

I believe the 17's will look good in the galant you can go for mucher broader tyres... it will full up the wheel wells or try the 18's and be carefull when driving.

Personally, I love chrome rims.

I have had 18" and 20" on my CS. The 20" being wrapped in 225/30. Harsh ride as anthony pointed out but its a personal preference. Back down to original 14" nowadays. Just be careful driving.

If I were you, I would go with the 18's. Choose your profile wisely.

I also love chromes , makes the car look rich.
My CS came with 14's 185/ 60 upgraded to chromes 205/50/15 ... then to 205/55 /15.
The 55 really fulled the wheel wells and gave the car an aggressive look.
The CS is long gone but 20's on a CS with cvt....I am not taking that chance.

My CY has 225/50/17 chromes. On my next tyre change I may go 235's

Well IMO, the 20" didn't harm the CVT. Only problem was that I was not getting complete lock of the wheel on either side. It was expected. It didn't bother me, I drove to suit and the 20" would be on for no longer than a month or when I feel for some bling, then back down to my OEM 14". Yes, trolley jack and swap my four wheels quite often.

Had 18" full face triple plate chrome on my lancer...took them off as they were heavy and fcuking up my suspension on a regular...The chrome looks nice but you should avoid it as many told me to do. I'm back down to 15" with no regrets. You can go with the chrome for the bling and as long as you have no problem changing suspension parts more frequently. Also, note that the chrome rims and tyres would be more expensive to maintain as well thanks to the wonderful roads we have in Trini.

Why do you want chromes in the first place? Some light racing inspired 17'swould look cork.

depanding on colour of your car the chromes does make it look rich and classy.
chromes are heavy so you have to use your discretion, my cs came with alloy 14s and I went with 15s chrome and no problem with suspension....naturally if you go with 18s or 20 s on a cs you asking for trouble.

my cy came with 16s went with 17s chrome.
in terms of maintiance yes it takes some work

Thanks for your input guys, I think I will stick with the 17's but might just change the rim itself and go with something racing and lightweight.

I was prepared to change my suspension parts whenever needed due to the heavy chrome rims and I used my discretion when driving but someone else may not be as discreet as I was.

Sounds like me Brotherhood, I usually drove hard and paid the price for it as well because many a times a hole that was not there a week or two before just suddenly appeared, so I would usually slam brakes and try to avoid. In doing so, the inner or outer edge of the rim would ketch the end of the hole and there would be a loud bang...rim bend/rim crack and twice I burst the tyre.

The roads just deplorable and not suited for big rims...

I run 18x81/2" rims, for three years now. With 40 series tyres. No problems. The problem is, that guys do not put enough pressure in their tyres for one. And run 35 series tyres, AND buy heavy ass chrome rims that damage easily.

You're right. My younger brother pumps 28-30 psi on 35 series with chrome. When I tell him to put 34psi which I use for the chrome, he thinks I talking sheit.

There was a time when I used to run through tyres every 4 months or so. guy at speedway told me that I was not putting enough pressure when I told him is 30 my mech told me to put. He told me I should at least be putting 35-40psi because of the thin profile with the 35 series. Started putting 35 then 40 soon after and never looked back, tyre shop didnt see me again either

I went from 14" to 18" wheels recently on my Galant and the ride is great, I am very pleased with my ride quality, but its black wheels with a polished lip, not chrome, (not a chrome fan).... im running 225/40/18.
