WTK: SR20VE+T or DET

Postby Dennis61 » March 27th, 2012, 3:34 pm

Just wanted to get some insight.
Which one would be more economical, to boost a SR20VE (to about 280-300whp) or buy a complete SR20DET?

DET would be cheaper short term.
The gains may be greater in boosting the VE or increasing the power of the DET, but would cost more in funding and experience.

Hello Dennis61. I am currently boosting a VE. But I had a GTiR DET that locked up - so I'm re-using the pistons from the DET, injectors, MAF. The turbo shaft was shaking - so I'm using a new one. To boost a VE from scratch would probably cost a good bit more than going with a DET - unless you get good deals on parts. I imagine DET's probably running about $12k plus or more? A VE could probably be $5k? I just guessing.

if u really want a ve-t.... use the det block and swap on the ve head. You will need to drill and tap for a oil feed for the solenoids to work. I also advise using the ve oil pump aswell

When u boosting the DE did u put in Oil squirters or go play up with the internals at all?

IMHO i think firstly it depends on how much power u want.

If u dont plan on crossing 400hp i dont see the need to go VE-T.

I have seen stock DETs take well over 350hp with just simple upgrades as stage 2 cams, t3/t4, 850cc inj and a PROPERLY tuned emanage Ultimate.

In the case where u want more than 400hp i think VE-T is the better build with some headwork, n1 cams, a forged low compression block ofcourse and a "junk" of bigg turbo like a GTX35

At the end of this discussion and all opinions noted, a DET head cud never flow as well as a VE head stock for stock.

The anticipation of Vvl on a det sounds like the way to go, so I may not sell the Vvl after all. ;-)
