Need help, external hard drive problems.

Postby stretch » June 2nd, 2012, 11:21 am

Having a problem and looking for assistance, bought a 3rd external hard drive for the year and all stopped working. The latest one is not yet 3days old, last night i put on 150gig of movies and this morn it stopped working. when plugged in to the pc, it lights up and you can eject it at the bottom right hand corner but you dont see it in my computer to open it up. suggestions? I also uninstalled the software for it and reinstalled but nothing has changed, i believe something is wromg with laptop becasue i cant see that 3 hard drives have stopped working in a short time.

Walmart? You mean Pricesmart cuz you just say sando. Well carry it back. It must have warranty. What you hurting your head so for. Show them and let them exchange it. Once you haven't tampered with any security screws or something. If it was truly Walmart in USA or Canada they would exchange it without raising an eyebrow.

I'd do this, but I'd rest it on a 15" speaker for a good hour and make sure the 150gb of movies gone.

did you check computer management console.??
i would suspect the controller card in your external hard drive.
are you using one enclosure with different hard drives in it.?

is the drive getting power? 12V and 5V to the hard drive itself.??

if it appears in device manager - that means the controller card in the external unit are being recognized in windows.

did you try the hard drive in another external on another machine.??

more information needed.

Yes at walmart, doesnt make sense carrying it back for a new one as yet because im sure the same problem will happen again. 3 in a couple months. im pretty sure a 4th will be not recognised.

So when plugged in, you here the windows noise recognising that a device is plugged in.
The hard drive is on top of laptop, and the speaker for it is around same area, will that really be it?
Lights do come on, on hard drive when plugged in.
I have tried in another laptop and desktop, which it worked in yesterday.
It does appear in Device Manager as WD Drive Management Devices. That is the last thing in device manager.
Dont understand what u mean with one enclosure and i guess it has 2 be getting power as it he light is blinking.

I had a similar problem before and it was the power cord that was faulty, and I was using the same power cord for all the drives. Make sure all connections to the drive are secure and not slack.

Is the normal 3.5" hard drives you talking about?
If yes, you could probably take one of the 3 drives (that don't have warranty) out of the external casing, and hook it up as a internal drive in a desktop pc and see what going on.

cheaper drives do not like being sat down idle. ie- if you only use it occasionally it somehow dies. (say, once every three to six months)

keep it plugged in.

You previously said it didn't work in another system. Does it work or not? Everything you're saying indicates that there is nothing wrong with the drive itself.

OP, ya ever thought that something may be wrong with that pc you're using since it working on other computers? Maybe the usb port shorting out or the controllers not working properly, hardware problem or something. What kind of troubleshooting logic you using in your head?

i probably didnt explain my self cleary.
I tried the hard drives on other pcs which it previously worked on and today it is not working. all 3 hard drives have spent the majority of time plugged into mine. I am guessing that my pc has destroyed them somehow. And yes the sound that wiindows make when a device is plugged in is heard and lights on hard drive is shown. You just dont see it in my computer. So what i am asking is if anyone has encountered this sort of problem and what is d procedure for fixing before i purchase another.
Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding.

acronis disk director (for windows) is what i use to manage partitions and hard drives. even if the drive is not showing up in windows (or mac) it should show up in this program. but normally when a drive isn't showing up in windows it is a an issue of being the wrong format, or just a drive letter wasn't assigned (for whatever reason).
